dont know if it's becuase my little boy can't aim to save his life (possibly dh as well )but netty seat hinges are always green like the verdigris stuff you get on copper or bronze which is nigh on impossible to get off and looks horrible.

Anyone got any solutions to removal and prevention of future build up please. Hinges are just the usual bog standard (ho ho)

I had this problem; it will come off if you give it a really good scrub with an old toothbrush and something like "bar keepers friend". I expect vim or ajax(if they still make such things)would probably work too.

It's gross though and hard work,I think I'm going to have to buy a new seat

doesnt brown sauce get the green off copper?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 18/04/2010 16:08

For prevention change the screws that are in the hinge - it is they that are causing the stain I expect (and yes, it is because they got wet).

got my ajax and got a toothbrush (may use dh's) ...I may be gone for some time!

Thank you for this thread, I have been puzzling over this problem for some time, having rubbed away diligently to no avail with my normal bathroom spray. I can report that my hinges are now gleaming thanks to the Astonish paste and an old toothbrush. Now I need to teach my DS and DH to aim straight!

yep i get this, its what happens when you have boys! i scrub mine weekly or more often with a toothbrush, total pita but it works, someone told me that the bleach in some cleaning products makes it worse and encourages the green stuff? dont know if thats true tho!

Put some vaseline on the screw - stops the liquid getting to the metal and corroding.

I had this problem, but I bought a new seat as we wanted one with a child seat built in,and it isn't happening with the new seat.I don't have boys,I think it was just general moisture,as dh is v good at aiming properly!

ahhhh, vaseline, thats a good idea.....house full of crap aimers here too...
