How much housework do I need to do to keep on top of things?

I hate housework and im rubbish at it. Me and my 2dcs 2 & 3 live in a small flat so space is tight and we have faaaaar too much stuff! It sounds so silly but I dont know how much to do each day. I really just want to keep on top of things. Im going to make myself a rota to keep on the front of the fridge in my attempt to make it work.
I was thinking:

Make the beds
load of washing
Hang up wet washing
tidy the kids room
hoover
once the little ones are in bed I would tidy away toys in the living room and do the dishes.

Then once a week clean the bathroom and loo, change the bedding and wash the floors.

Does this sound ok? Have I missed anything? When I write it like that it sounnds so easy but I really struggle to keep the place looking nice.

Any ideas and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ironing, dusting,polishing,windows,oven fridge....sounds awful....argghhh

LIZS · 16/04/2010 16:38

Wash the sink and loo while kids are in the bath. Do you need to hoover every day ?
kitchen - hob, oven and sink, worktops
dusting
wipe out fridge

that sounds great spooky.

I think one key thing is to do something when you have a spare 10 mins - eg put that load of ironing away etc.

I clean bathroom twice a week but 5 people live in my house!

Also you might want to add in a kitchen day - clean bin, clean cupboard doors/windowsills (mine get skanky), clean fridge.

I also schedule washing towels, changing and washing bedlinen (I do it once a week) and cleaning out the bread bin but then I am told I am a bit anal!

Have you been on the flylady website? There is a whole section on there which you go through and it helps you set up a daily/weekly plan.

spookycharlotte121 · 16/04/2010 16:47

oh god yeh duhhhh wipe the kitchen surfaces. think i would forget my head if it wernt screwed on.

Ds is very good at dusting that can be his little job.

i did look at fly lady but found it a bit annoying I want it all done like now and its a bit slow.

sorry I see you mentioned washing the bedlinen!

I do hoover (downstairs) every day, takes me 7 mins (I timed it once) and I feel much better!

BertieBotts · 16/04/2010 16:48

Yeah it is a bit chirpy! Actually I think the slowness is probably why I haven't got very far yet...

spookycharlotte121 · 16/04/2010 16:49

oh and I appologise about "wernt" i sound like a dingle lol!

have added clean kitchen on to the list. windows.... how often do I do them?

lol its very precise.... the shining the sink pissed me off so much i didnt do any more. I thought whats the point in that, im going to wash the dishes and it will be back to square one again.

I try to hoover the lounge daily becaise we eat in here. no space in the kitchen ad no dining room so the table is in the lounge. gets a bit mucky.

Flylady IS very, very, very annoying, infuriating in fact. Unfortunately it's also very good. Grr.

Take a peek [[http://flylady.net/pages/FLYingLessons_Journal.asp here], this is the bit that shows you how to build up a plan, it really is worth the effort. You don't need to do all the sections. The way she gets you to do it allows for flexibility, with two tiny children in the house you'll be buggered really soon with a plan that's set in stone.

Read the bit, make the plan and never look at the site again.

This is the only other bit that's worth looking at, some of the tips are handy.

Have you considered getting a cleaner? They could probably do the once-a-week jobs in 1.5 hours for around 10 pounds.

Obviously it depends how tight money is but maybe you can cut back elsewhere? Then you can avoid doing something you hate so much, plus they will do it quicker than you.

I posted my daily/ weekly routine a bit further down here if it helps
I reckon I do about 45 mins a day max, in 3 lots
15 in morning, 15 early evening once DS goes to bed and 15 before bed which is SO achievable
