where do you keep your plates? high or low?

yes i am being obsessive about it but bear with me.

my plates live in the cupboard above the kettle. i have always stored plates in a above the work top cupboard.

we bought new plates (cheap sainsburys ones, broke too many of the old ones)

THEY DON'T FIT IN THE CUPBOARD!

so do i

a) put up with the cupboard not closing ever so slightly - dh laughed at me when i suggested that as he knows it'll bug me
b) take the plates back to shop - i'll have to dig the box out the recycling bin, hope its clean and re package everything (bit scuzzy)
c) re arrange my cupboards and store them in one of the below worktop cupboards - i think it'll be awkward bending down to get them out

tell me what you do!

yes i know i should have better things to worry about!

myplates are always in the low down cupboards, in middle of moving at the mo and they going down low again. As you say they don't fit in high up cupboards

norksinmywaistband · 14/04/2010 21:14

Mine are in a top cupboard, but are in a plate rack thingy, so they fit as do not fit when stacked

mrsflux · 14/04/2010 21:17

norks what sort of rack? i can't visualise how i could fit them in the cupboard? they are too wide when horizontal and same when vertical.

can't believe how stressed this is making me!

It is similar to this
And I just raised the shelf in the cupboard to allow the room.

Lonicera · 14/04/2010 21:24

mine are in the base units.

the kids can get their own plates out which is a big plus in my book

mrsflux · 14/04/2010 21:27

lonicera hmm i hadn't thought of that. ds loves getting stuff out cupboads - he's 1!

I had exactly the same problem but I now actually prefer them in the lower cupboard because it is next to the dishwasher.

DaisymooSteiner · 14/04/2010 21:32

They're in a base unit in the kitchen island, just opposite the dishwasher, on a sliding shelf. They are the heaviest items to put away, so this way I can slide the shelf out to where the dishwasher is, and transfer them incredibly easily. Before we had a new kitchen they were in a wall unit and it was always a PITA to lift a stack of heavy plates in and out. This way works much better. And as someone else said it means the kids can get them out easily when they lay the table.

Earlybird · 14/04/2010 21:49

dishes low, glasses high.

BooKangerooWonders · 15/04/2010 14:52

Open shelf? If you use them often, they won't get dirty. All my breakable crockery is, and I wouldn't go back to cupboards. OTOH, all dc's plastic stuff is in cupboard under sink so they can get it out themselves.

(Used to live in a flat where the plates lived in a wall cupboard and didn't fit. The slightly-open cupboard drove me bonkers!)

Pavlov · 15/04/2010 14:56

i have a lovely white minimalist style plate rack, with white modern plates on, bowls on a shelf on the top of the rack. it looks great imo. But i use everything in it lots.

DreamTeamGirl · 15/04/2010 17:43

Oooh always high up. Had them low for a while but it really irritated me
Bet they wont fit nicely in your dishwasher or washing up bowl either ...

I dont like big plates but its like everything, normal size plates are now small...
We live in a supersize generation

mrsflux · 15/04/2010 19:47

we don't have the wall space for an open shelf boo nice idea tho

pavlov what's your rack look like/ where's it from?

dreamteamgirl they do fit in the dish washer - although we had to move the top shelf up. they are only 2cm max bigger than the old ones which were on the small side a always thought. maybe i have an odd kitchen

low; too low which i didn't realise until i had a boy baby, the lady babies were not interested - just letting them go now and planning a trip to ikea and then putting them in a high place.

Pavlov · 15/04/2010 22:29

mrsflux - i got it from ebay after about 12 months trying to find something i liked that did not look 1980s wooden frilly plate rack style! I will see if they still do it, or get a link to it for you.

Pavlov · 15/04/2010 22:34

so, i spent 12 months looking, and then i find something similar within a few minutes !

this is pretty much what we have, but we have it probably a little wider/more plate spaces in it. We paid maybe a little less? not much in it.

Pavlov · 15/04/2010 22:36

oh and also we bought cheap white large plates which don't fit in out cupboard either...from M&S! £2 a plate, so when it gets broken, easy to replace! I have plates, breakfast bowls, pasta bowls, small plates. Now i want the soup bowls too .

stealthsquiggle · 15/04/2010 22:39

low, in huge drawers which are one of the best design features of our lovely kitchen (it's the only thing we have managed to do to the house). Drawers hold all crockery, pans, serving dishes and 'bakeware' - nothing gets lost at the back of cupboards and nothing gets broken.

mrsflux · 16/04/2010 09:16

Pavlov I like that but we don't have any spare walls.

think I might re arrange my cupboards at the weekend.

NomDePlume · 16/04/2010 09:21

low

SeaTrek · 17/04/2010 11:10

Low! No choice really as we only have two slim cupboards high.

Ambi · 17/04/2010 11:20

Low, in a corner cupboard which has a lazy susan style shelving unit in it. In our old house we had them up high, much better under units.
