DD is an independent eater - or at least she tries to be. So at 14 months you can imagine it's quite messy! I try my best to bib her up but she still manages to get it everywhere.

I am struggling to get these stains out of her clothes now. What do you use/swear by?

I just had a problem with tomoto pasta and my son's white vests.

I made a lemon and water solution soaked the stain then hung them on the line to dry. I had to leave them there for 2 day's but the stains are hardly noticable now.

When I say soaked I mean poured the lemon juice and water straight over the stain and hung on line.

buy long-sleeved bibs from Sillybillyz

if not, vanish stick and a nailbrush
wash as normal and hang in sun to dry

and buy lots of tops in either yellow/orange or plain white - the latter can be bleached which takes out everything except possibly banana

shout stain remover

motherbeyond · 07/04/2010 13:44

i find that vanish oxy (in the big pink tub) works well...i've just soaked a load of baby stained stuff and a few of my nursing bra's that are greying...in the bath for 6 hours..all stain free now! i give them a really long wash afterwards in the machine to remove all chemical residue....

it's really good anyway because some of the stuff is out the attic (im due my 3rd baby in 2 weeks) so was 3year old stainage!and it still came out

I get long sleeved bibs from Mothercare - some (my favourites) have 2 sets of velcro and a bit that goes over DSs lap. I also put a muslin over the bar of his highchair, as that catches some stuff (like when he squeezes all the juice out of oranges and strawberries!

For the existing stains then I got red wine out of a white t-shirt with the tesco version of the pink tub vanish stuff - painted it on in a foamy mess and forgot about it for an hour and it washed clean.

Full-body armour. Ie long-sleeved, waterproof, machine-washable bibs.

Also Vanish.

Also coordinating colour of child's outfit (and mine, too, sometimes) to the day's menu. So never wearing white or pale colours on a day when dc is going to eat tomato-sauce-based dish!

Have just ordered some Silly Billyz bibs!

Another vote for Vanish Oxi in the pink tub. If you don't want / haven't got time to soak things I have also used Ecover stain remover - lots of brands do this kind of thing: it's in a bottle with a brush tip and you dib some on the stained area and then scrub it a bit with the brush, before putting it in to wash.

Shaz10 · 10/04/2010 22:40

PrettyCandles I do that for me! Going to Italian restaurant? Better put that white top back into the wardrobe.

SpeedyMackechnie · 10/04/2010 22:43

Just hang out in sunlight/daylight. Always works and no need for any chemicals.

Trust me, it does actually work!

Except for banana stains - NOTHING gets those out...

onadietcokebreak · 11/04/2010 20:46

I vouch for sunlight now it has returned!
Also keep a tin of stain slayer / desolv it in your laundry cupboard...pretty lethal stuff as got rid of lily pollen in my carpet.

nomorecake · 11/04/2010 23:48

i used a household stain removing soap bar, cant remember the brand now but fairy do one which i saw in waitrose once, (this, i think).

dampen stain, rub on soap, scrub hard, rinse. then chuck in a normal wash and hang in sunlight. got rid of everything except plum. (i think it shifted banana too)

at the moment using normal bath soap bar to get paint off ds's clothes. washing powder alone doesnt always shift it. you could try this on food stains too.

daysoftheweek · 11/04/2010 23:57

oh yes any tips on banana please
