Moving into new house on Monday - tips for getting sorted asap?

We moved out of our house and into my parents a couple of weeks ago while we move into our new house in another area.

I thought I had done really well with de-cluttering but we have a 120 square ft storage unit FULL and a van FULL (because it wouldn't fit in the unit!) and stuff at my parents house!

I am worried about our house just being a mess again. I want to make a whole fresh start in this house with a nice tidy house and a good routine.

I am also wondering how the hell I am going to get everything unpacked!

We are moving on Monday too. I can't wait but it's a pain in the ass isn't it.

We have been slowly packing over the weekend and literally getting rid of EVERYTHING we haven't used for at least 3 months and packing up the rest.

In your case, as it's already all packed up (I presume) I would start by unpacking one box at a time and going through it and throwing/selling/charity shopping any thing you don't want/need/use.

It will probably take longer to unpack doing it this way but then you won't get overwhelmed and you feel much better about having a nice new house not cluttered up with stuff you don't actually need.

I have also just posted a thread about getting into a good routine for the new place.
Good Luck with the move.

have you got a garage?

move boxes into the garage- unpack one at a time as above- anything not reached in 6 months, take to the tip without opening!

No we don't have a garage. We will have an upstairs playroom that we might have to use for storage. BUT it would be great for the kids to have it ready for them when we move in as they are too young to understand whats going on (1 and 2) so we hope to make it as good as we can for them in the first few days, and then introduce them to the house.

I would say that as you unpack either find a home or get rid of it.
If you have 2 keep just the nicest
If it is a bit naff bin it
If it is a gadget you never use, freecycle it
If it is manky old linen and towels bin it- you will never use it.

I moved so much stuff and filled my lovely brand new house and the garage and was gutted. Now 3 years on I am finally free of all the clutter, but I really wish I had never tried to shoehorn it into my lovely home

if you dont have to clear the storage unit maybe just keep it on for a week or so- but do think carefully- do you really like this stuff enough to pay rent on it?
