Does your iron make your electricity trip switch... flip!

My iron keeps on making my electric go ker-put. Minor problem but I would like to be able to do my ironing without running back and forth to my fuse box.

Would a new iron sort the problem, or is it just one of those things?

there is something wrong with your iron and you need a new one I'm afraid, sharpish!!

The fuse is there to protect you and if the iron is tripping it, you need to get rid

EarthMotherImNot · 04/04/2010 11:09

Not our iron but a while back this kept happening when we turned the tumble dryer on.

We called in an electrician who told us this means your dryer is faulty, stop using it and get the repair people in now.

Turns out the dryer was one more switch on from blowing up

Stop using your iron pronto.
You need a new one.

There is a short circuit in your iron. Just buy a new one (cheaper than getting it fixed!).

Slartybartfast · 04/04/2010 11:45

mine used to, on steam. can't remember if i got a new one

ShinyAndNew · 04/04/2010 11:50

My mums used to on steam. Mine doesn't and the one she has now doesn't. I am fairly sure that it is not something they are meant to do. But I am not that experinced with ironing. We have lived here 6 months and in that time have ironed twice. I had to go and buy an ironing board the first time.

Nemofish · 04/04/2010 14:09

What, no more ironing until I get a new one?

How will I cope?

Our clothes will be tumble dried more wrinkled!

This was always my sign that I needed a new one, used to have a tefal every time and after about 2 years it would start tripping out the electric.

Just treated myself to a tefal steam generator iron in the Argos sale (plus I had some Argos vouchers to take the sting out of the price)

My goodness, I have no ironing pile left (never heard of in my house before) it is amazing, steam a plenty and breezes through the creases.

Igglybuff · 05/04/2010 20:49

Mine did this. My great uncle who was an electrician had a look at it and found that the water tank was leaking into the wiring. So we could have been electrocuted!

So, you need a new iron.

I have had an iron and tumble/condensor dryer do this. Unfortunately, both needed to be replaced. Electrical items don't seem to be built to last these days!

Ravener · 12/03/2017 12:22

DON'T BUY A NEW ONE YET. A fix could be simpler than making a cake, and hope I save the environment and your purses a little. All my Bosch iron needed was a clean out and the electrical connectors had become slightly damp as steam will get past the plastic covers slowly. If the connectors and cable are very wet you probably have a tank leak (you might be able to get a spare tank online). Be sure to unplug from the mains. They are simple to take apart. The only slightly tricky bit was getting to the screw at the front under the covers (when you put back together you'll need back off the cover at the back slightly and then click together). You may need a star screwdriver which are a couple of quid - take your iron to the screwdriver shop. Fill the water tank separately and check it's not leaking before reassembling. Good luck.

Had a similar problem, bought new iron, tried different sockets, checked what else was switched on. Eventually, took the cover off the iron and found loads of fluff inside. Cleaned it out with a dry paint brush and it seems to be OK touch wood.

GrubbyWindows · 13/07/2017 18:10

ravener the OP may well have bought one or even several by now, since her iron was tripping out 7 years ago...

Itsmytemporaryname · 13/07/2017 18:33

It could be that your circuit is overloaded.
Does it trip if you use it in a different room?

Itsmytemporaryname · 13/07/2017 18:35

Oh god zombie thread. I wonder if OP is still around?
I must know about the iron!
