How can I get mould out of a babygrow?

I was ill last week and fell behind with the washing. One of ds2's babygrows which must have had yoghurt or something on it got srucnhed up and the sleeve has gone mouldy. I didn't notice till I had already washed it and was hanging it out to dry. Since then I have soaked it in napisan and biological powder and washed it on 60. Some of the lighter spots of mould have faded but some were very deep and don't seem to be vanishing.

If it was a cheap one I'd just throw it away but it was an organic one cut for cloth nappies by Frugi so really don't want to chuck it. It has a sea animals pattern on it so don't think I can bleach it.

Can it be saved?

I don't think so, annoyingly

This has happened with us returning from a wet camping trip with a bagful of damp washing.

Scrubbing will clean it but the mark left behind often won't shift.

I was thinking if all fails as the mould is confined to one of the sleeves I might cut the sleeves off and make it a kind of vestgro!

I just wanted to cry because ds2 hardly has anything new as I kept everything from ds1. I buy him one nice thing and now it's ruined .

Hang it out on your washing line for a few days. If that doesn't shift it, nothing will.

Try soaking it in milton, apparently that's very good at getting rid of mould stains.

This happened to me.

Our washing machine was broken so baby clothes were left in the laundry basket for a few days with what I think was stray squashed in banana...
The clothes piled up and the mould spread. In the end the whole lot had to get chucked.
Nothing shifted the marks, even after washing for the 100th time with all sorts of powders/liquids/bleach.
I actually cried over it! Because like you, it was all brand new stuff and wasn't cheap.

I learnt my lesson that day!

Sorry to say, ime, nothing shifts mould .

I used grot buster on my mould and it worked a treat.

tutu100 · 28/03/2010 21:42

I think I will try the hanging on the line idea and then if that fails it's a vestgro. Off to google grotbuster though as it sounds very interesting.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I will let you know if it's sucessful.

Oh yes there is something, boil wash it in a pan with a scoop of oxy powder, I use the Whizz stuff from Netto, you might find you have a sparkling pan too, a very nice side effect. I used it to good effect with mouldy banana encrusted bib that I found stuffed under the couch.

You can try some Vanish powder and just keep changing the solution for a few days/a week. I did that with a top that I thought was for the bin, the colour faded every so slightly, but after a week the stain came out!

When DS2 was about to be christened, I got out the family christening gown only to discover that the front of it was covered in a revolting orange mould.

I'm pretty sure that DS1, who had worn it 14 months previously, had regurgitated milk down the front of it and I hadn't known this and put it away without cleaning it .

Anyway, I was sure it was ruined and that my mother would disinherit me. Local dry cleaners wouldn't risk touching it but recommended that I made a paste of bio washing liquid and a bit of water, and scrubbed at the marks with this mixture on an old toothbrush.

Worked like a charm, not a bit of mould left, beautiful christening photos all round.

Thanks for the new suggestions. Soaking in Milton hasn't worked. It's now pegged out on the line, have tried soaking in vanish already, but will try again for longer. Then biological paste and toothbrush! This challenge is not going to beat me!

Which one is it?

goodname · 31/03/2010 11:09

I used milton tablets on my pram and all the mould came out and it all looked lovely and shiny. Try putting the babygro in water and then popping a couple of tablets right on top of the mouldy bit. You will need to leave it for a few hours or overnight and sometimes need to add a couple more tablets but it should work.

It's the seafari baby grow. He looks so cute in it. It's been pegged out on the line all day today, in the hope of some sunshine, un fortunately we haven't had any!
