Vomiting dd -Tumble drier - luxury or necessity

bobdog · 22/03/2010 10:46

DD was sick last night over:
duvet, fitted sheet, pj's, waterproof sheet, lower bunk duvet cover & duvet, fitted sheet, carpet, book shelf, cot mattress sheet & cover, new pj's, two more tops

The washing machine is churning, it's raining outside and we don't have a tumble drier, husband's away so don't want to leave house with sick dd and tiny dd2 to sit in launderette.

So is a tumble drier a luxury or necessity in your life?

to add insult to injury all the girls bedding was clean on yesterday

Poor dd

We had it in our house last week, it's vile

No tumble-drier here

Weather was too bad to hang it outside

I put heating on in 1 or 2 rooms only and get it dry that way

I feel your pain too. Everyone here had it over the weekend.

3 dc here so I count it as a necessity but try
not to use it during summer (if its dry!)

The machine is churning & the house is hung with sheets - looks quite pretty. Lazy day for the child, she's all pale and sad.

You have my sympathies. We've just emerged from a week of this. Umpteen loads of washing every day. We had one night when I had to change ds1's bedding 4 times. Luckily it was dry last week so almost all of it could be dried outside.

Hope she feels better soon.

(I fall into the necessity camp, btw)

Surely the heating on for several hours would cost about as much as 1hr tumble drying?

I don't have the heating on during the day (unless very very cold) but I do use my tumble dryer about 3 x week for 40mins-1hr at a time.

My elec bills are average I think...

We used to have really pukey twins and have never had a tumble drier. I have been known to put the heating on in the middle of the summer though just to get more stuff dry at once.

My DS1 only ever pukes in bed on the day I have put clean sheets on...

we had this a few weeks ago. It was two duvets (one a double) as well as all the bedding. I chucked the duvets on teh line for the rain to soak and then cleaned the vomited on areas and left hte rain to rinse . Luckily the days after were fine so get them dry and sun bleached clean too. Covers sheets etc were draped artistically over hte clothes horse and shower rail in the bathroom to dry.

When ds was a baby I didn´t have one and its a pain on rainy days - or weeks - when your house is full of damp laundry that refuses to dry. Recently my mum gave me their old one and while I still prefer to line/air dry it is so fabulous to have as a backup. I´d say still a luxury, if I hadn´t been given it I´d plod on as always but its a very useful item, if we have another baby I imagine it´ll be put to good use!

I worked it out one time that it was costing me about €100 a year to use the tumble dryer.

We can afford it and I hate having washing hanging around the house so most of our washing goes in the dryer.

bobdog · 22/03/2010 16:32

I went through the whole washable nappy thing without one but feel slightly overwhelmed with the bedding bulk.

Recently held a sicky baby for a broken friend for a couple of hours, now there is a situation that really needed a machine to deal with. In an afternoon the poor thing feed/threw up, feed/threw up managed to hit untold muslins, a sofa, older sisters clothes, pile of unput away laundry.

Let us all pause in our actions and send out a supportive thought to those who've had months/years of sicky washing from small babies.

Ah well that makes me feel better. ds3 does have reflux.
