Pregnancy friendly method of cleaning our (very grubby!) oven

Our oven is in a slightly embarassing state (was using the excuse that we were planning to replace it but not enough money now).

Am 21 weeks pregnant so don't want to use the normal Mr Muscle etc. as have visions of it turning baba green or something .

What else can I use that will actually help remove the grime that's caked on in there??

And yes, I know I'm a total slattern

I think there's a company you can employ that clean your oven for you.

Most pregancy-friendly way I can think of

Would be even more friendly if I could remember the name of the company..

Ovenu

I've never used them, but I've seen threads on here singing their praises.

SoupDragon · 21/03/2010 18:48

I was going to suggest Ovenu or similar

Failing that, get your DP to use the Mr Muscle or that cleaner that's "so simple even a man can use it"

JamieJay · 21/03/2010 18:53

Thanks - am too embarassed by the state of it pay someone else (despite being a slattern I'm the type would would clean before the cleaner came!)

Think it might be very early nesting but really want to do it myself for some reason

We have just cleaned ours with Astonish- no caustic smell and worked vey well

neversaydie · 21/03/2010 18:55

Supervise your DH from the far side of the room?

mnistooaddictive · 21/03/2010 18:56

Don't be emabrrassed, they will have seen worse - mine!! It was truly awful and I felt terrible waqtching the man scrub it for 2 hours but it was worth it and he comes back every year. I see it that he has to earn a living somehow!

Wolfcub · 21/03/2010 19:14

Ovenmate (from lakeland) I don't specifically know if it is pregnancy friendly but there are no fumes and you wear gloves. Paint it on, wash it off, voila clean oven!

gruber · 21/03/2010 19:16

Second Ovenu, my mother always gets the man in before she has family to stay! They do such a good job and you can stay in the other room, they are honest, friendly and do an excellent job.

onadietcokebreak · 21/03/2010 19:17

Ovenmate, steam cleaner or get your DP/Friend to do it!

onadietcokebreak · 21/03/2010 19:21

Can I ask how much Ovenu services generally cost?

Buzzybb · 21/03/2010 19:39

I use this for deep fat fryer might work

5 Tbsp Baking Soda
3 Drops wash up liquid
4 Tbsp White Vinegar
Mix into a paste leave for a few min
use a green scrubby sponge [not on Stainless Steel] Scrub out and rinse out

Other option dissolve dishwasher Tab on vvv hot water and wash out with that

Sonilaa · 22/03/2010 07:57

get your partner, mum, mil to do it. or hire a cleaner.

frakkinaround · 22/03/2010 08:19

I second the soda/vinegar approach.

I make a paste from the washing up liquid and bicarb of soda, rub it on, spray with vinegar and rub like mad while it's fizzing for little spots or use the recipe from buzzybb for the whole oven.

Smells v. vinegary though!

GMI (get a man in), the ovenu men will scrub and polish your oven till it shines like a new pin. They will take the door off and get to all those hard to reach places.
We bought a holiday flat with an oven that even after I had used lots of caustic nastiness still look like it had never been cleaned. The ovenu man came he used nothing that need more than thin gloves to clean it, but it now looks like new. The best £40 I ever spent.

JamieJay · 23/03/2010 20:36

Thanks for the suggestions will try the soda/vinegar approach or just smile sweetly at my DM.

As much as I like the sound of ovenu I can't justify spending anything like £40 as money very tight at the moment but might see if I can save up for it sometime
