can carpet beetles eat loft insulation?

Last year we had a quite few carpet beetles. This year it seems to be worse! My flat is first floor, above a shop and two years ago the shop installed loft insulation above their ceiling, i.e. under my floor. I have open floorboards in the living room and carpet elsewhere. They seem to be concentrated in the living room, although I have found a few in the bedroom too, which is next to the living room. I have turned the flat upside down looking for a source of infestation to no avail. There is a fireplace in the living room which has been blocked up for years (the chimney itself is long gone), so v. unlikely to be a dead bird or nest in there. We have a cat (and therefore a litter tray) but haven't noticed them being particularly concentrated around that area.

There are pigeons roosting outside on the ledge above my bay window (so window ledges have bird shit on, nice) - we are having external redecs done soon so will be getting rid of them then. But the windows are closed, double glazed and again, the bugs don't seem to be particularly numerous in that area. It seems to be they are coming up from under the floor/from under skirting boards? Is this likely? How can I get rid??I have tried a fleaspray which seemes to kill them but only when they come into contact with an area that's been sprayed.

Help!

I don't know anything about carpet beetles, but the standard loft insulation materials are totally inorganic -- nothing could eat them. The insulation work may have disturbed the blighters/opened up a route to get to your flat .
