Ok, old faithful Hotpoint WM is slowly dying (it needs water pouring into it by hand as not filling properly ) and my dad tried to fix it but says its the programmer (expensive) so basically we need a new one.

I've looked at the Which reports and pretty much decided on Bosch, but not sure whether to get
7kg Or 8kg
I thought maybe a bigger one would last longer as less washes?!?

So, does size really matter??? and does anyone love/hate their Bosch WM and want to share their feelings?

I got one recently and I found that there seem to be lots of slightly different versions of the same thing but mine looks like the in on your 7kg link.
Its fine for me and 4 DCs, very easy to use and the display of how long is left is very useful.
The thing I miss from my previous machine is the rinse only programme which I used a lot for swimming things when the DCs have swiiming 2 days running. But, there is a 15 minute quick wash which I use instead.
I'd buy mine again

Love my Bosch, have a smaller load size as I wanted to stack with a dryer and it's not recommended with bigger loads. It's been going nearly non stop for a year without a quibble and I have three boys who do f'ball/rugby and swimming, and surf club in the summer, so it has coped with a lot of mud and sand.

Thanks for the replies... your big families with many activities make me feel like a wuss for complaining about laundry - I only have 1 baby... although he does seem to use a lot of nappies and throw up down as many items of clothing/bedding as he can!

Maybe 7kg would be enough then... Am being seduced by being able to do a couple of massive loads pw rather than hundreds of little loads as at moment... [lazy emoticon]

I have had Bosch and AEG always - and would definately recommend them.

I had only ever used ancient machines in rented houses. Then when we chose our own last year i thought all about the different types of cycles, time, efficiency... but what I missed was that the one we chose (john lewis own brand) makes the most excruciating beeping sound over and over again when it finishes for what feels like at least a minute. And then if you've childlocked the machine (which is neat), it does it all over again when you unlock it.

Unbearable noise, and would wake up a sleeping baby anywhere in the house or garden. And so unnecessary! What possible use could the beeping be?

I long to destroy whatever part of the machine makes the noise, still haven't found where it comes from.

Have since heard that lots of new appliances do this, including dishwashers. Shudder.

Long post, in nutshell: make sure the one you choose doesn't beep!

I have a Bosch - can't remember what model - it is about 4.5 yrs old now. My last one was also a Bosch, and there were some things I preferred about it. For example - it had a continuously variable temperature dial. For some things I turned it up a bit more, for other things turned it down a bit. My current Bosch has settings for 30, 40 , 60, 95 (90?) but does not have a 50 degree program. I miss that for polycotton sheets which I wouldn't trust at 60. My old machine also had a higher water level button which I could press to allow things to slosh about more iyswim.

umf - my machine can also beep when finished, but it was easy to turn that off. Check your manual.

On balance, though, Bosch machines are pretty good and clean well.

My model has a 1600 spin speed which I never used to use as it creased things too much, but I now have a (Bosch) tumble drier and the higher speed is great to get water out of towels before drying.

Thanks for the messages... after biting the bullet and ordering the 8kg machine the company called me and did a(n offputingly) lengthy and hard sell on some insurance where you got unlimited repairs or 'free' replacement of the washing machine. I managed to escape without buying it as felt bulldozed and checked online to see if Bosch did the same offer. They did but it was £189 per year (although would only pay it if machine needed fixing, whereas other offer was £5.99pm from now ).

Then I thought I'd check if Hotpoint did the same offer. Called them and they said for £139 (in 10 payments) they'd come and fix current machine and that the whole machine would then be guaranteed for a year where they either fix it or give free replacement. If they can't fix it when they 1st come then you don't pay anything. It seems like a good deal as until now its always worked ok, so I'm a bit that I won't be getting the fancy new machine but I guess that I might not have to spend £450.

get one wiht maz 1400 ( although we use that rarely)

Flame · 04/03/2010 21:00

Love my bosch. I would get the bigger one purely based on bedding etc.

I didn't choose my machine (it was an amazing gift) but I love it to bits.

I like the beeping at the end of the wash.

feedthegoat · 04/03/2010 21:01

I've got an 8 kg Bosch and really like the fact that I can cram half the wash basket in there .

leeloo1 · 05/03/2010 13:09

Thanks... well I haven't cancelled the order for the 8kg machine (as due to be delivered in 2 weeks), so if they can't fix my current one then it'll be nice to have a bigger machine.

satc2bringiton · 05/03/2010 16:18

I had a Bosch and I hated it - it always stunk and had grey slime under the rim.

Never had that problem with the other 2 machines I had.

Finbar · 05/03/2010 16:21

Bosch was recommended by the guy who came to fix our ailing Hotpoint if that helps. the next one we bought was a Bosch - excellent so far

cece · 05/03/2010 16:24

umf - my Bosch used to beep at me too. Why do you need that? Anyway I phoned up their customer services and they talked me through turning the beep off. I now wash beep free.

Oh and yes I would buy Bosch again. I think I have 7kg and it is fine for a family of 5.

mowbraygirl · 07/03/2010 17:25

I have a Bosch and love it there is only 2 of us DH and me these days so often just use the easy- care programme takes just over an hour and clothes always come out very clean. I already had a Bosch dishwasher which I was very pleased with and local shop recommended the washing machine when mine died.

MrsDinky · 07/03/2010 22:59

Hi,

We've got the 7kilo one (since November) it's fine (apart from the beeps! - thank you all I'm going to go and disable them in a minute) and a couple of other minor things - a very high pitched whistle when on high spin speeds, and the buttons you use to toggle down the temperature, spin speed etc are annoying, they are not push buttons nor are they just touch pads, somewhere in between, touch them too lightly and nothing happens, next touch and it's moved on two settings and you have to go all the way round again (eg changing from 1400 to 1200 you overshoot to 800 and then have to press it several more times to get back to 1200). I normally want 30C and 1200 bu the default is 40C 800 on the Easycare cycle, so I have to go through all this every time I use it

My engineer recommended Bosch too.
