How do you iron shirts?

I was ironing my DH's shirt this morning and it got me thinking about how best to do it. I have a strict order which is:

collar flat
collar folded
cuffs flat
sleeves
back of shoulders
back of shirt
front of shirt

How do you do it?

collar, folded only

back of shoulders and down onto front each side

arms

side, back other side

can do a shirt in about 3 mins.

Igglybuff · 23/02/2010 14:23

3 mins! I do it in 5 and thought that was good.

I don't mess about, have a good iron. I have to iron dh's shirt each night as we don't have enough room to store them ironed without them getting creased sohave got it down to a fine art.

and they're all easy iron types, hang them straight from washing so least fuss as poss.

Igglybuff · 23/02/2010 15:05

Do you use any starch or that funny fragranced water? DH bought some but not convinced!

Van Heusen non iron shirts-fantastic really work still get creases on arm wash after wash! We buy 5 a year and they are worn every working day-last a year no problems.

nomorecake · 23/02/2010 18:34

collar flat.
(never folded its not good for the internal collar construction, apparently!)

yoke/shoulders.

sleeves and cuffs.

then rotate shirt around the board as i do lefthand side front, back, then righthand side front.

i worked, briefly, with shirt tailors.

Locate mobile.

Phone J & B Impress.

Stuff 12 clean shirts in to bag.

Open door to J & B Impress man that night at 8pm and hand over bag of shirts.

Next day, open door to J & B Impress man at about 8pm and take 12 ironed shirts on hangers from him.

Hand over £10.

Ta da!

I iron as per instructions from a professional butler I saw on TV years ago:

collar flat (always in from the points towards the middle)
cuffs flat (ditto)
sleeves both sides
all round body of shirt
Shoulders/yoke

done

How sad is this thread ? of people with drop off/pick up ironing service - I think the petrol cost for one round here would be £10.

Igglybuff · 23/02/2010 18:56

bibbity £10?? is that all??

stealth, very sad. But it's taken me years to perfect my shirt ironing method so interested to hear others! Everything else I iron doesn't get quite the attention as shirts. I also find it theraputic ironing a batch of shirts (provided I'm in the mood! Sshhh don't tell DH)

nomorecake I've noticed that DH's shirt collars do wear quickly on the crease so will stop ironing folded.

Collar flat
yoke and top of sleeves
cuffs
sleeves (turn around to avoid crease and iron centre of sleeve)
Front, back, front.

That's just the right way nI see nomorecake agrees

I can do 7 of DH's in an hour, I timed it once

stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2010 19:04

Igglybuff - never ever tell my DH (since we both work I don't see any particular reason to iron his shirts on a regular basis) but I find it quite theraputic as well.

wubblybubbly · 23/02/2010 19:10

Collar flat
Yoke
Sleeves
Back
Front

Don't iron the cuffs, never even noticed they might need ironing!

DH is a big broad bloke, so it takes bloody ages so I only do them as a treat

bibbitybobbityhat · 23/02/2010 19:40

Yep. £10 for 12 items. And in London too. Tis the very reason I don't iron, tra la la la la.

TidyBush · 23/02/2010 19:45

My Dad (army trained) taught me this litte ditty:

First the collar
Then the chest
Then the cuffs
and then the rest

although TBH I do it this way:

Collar flat
Collar folded
Sleeves from cuffs up
Front right
Back
Front left
yoke

and I can do it in 2 mins

Igglybuff · 23/02/2010 19:51

2 mins Tidybush, I am impressed!

stealth, I wont tell if you wont...

bibbity - in London you say? I do like a good ironing session but I could use them as a treat every now and then!

wubbly for some reason, DH's cuffs get a funny crease down them. No idea why!
