i am planning a bathroom spring clean. I have lime scale on taps. Black mould bits on sealant. And some grout is yellow. It doesnt sound good but not actually that bad. Thinking of using vinegar and a toothbrush? Or bleach? Or getting a lime scale remover? I dont know what to do. Any ideas wise mnetters? Tia. Oh and am pg so dont want to gas myself out too much either

If I were you, I would go down to your local ironmongers and get some specialist products from HG. The HG mould spray is really fantastic at getting rid of the black mould on sealant - the only product I have really found that works. And there is a product called HG bath shine that really works too - it gets rid of soap scum brilliantly.

Cillit Bang bathroom cleaner also very good - get some of that too. And, while you are at it, buy some caustic soda and clean your pipes out with boiling water and caustic soda.

Get some Harpic 100% limescale remover, the toilet cleaner stuff.
Pour some on the taps and any limescale , the yellow bits. Leave for a few minutes , open windows ,then scrub away and rinse.
The black mould on the sealant is bloody hard to get rid of , probably easier to strip and replace sealant.

be careful with cilit bang it stripped the shine off my taps .

Will look out for the HG stuff bonsoir , have a few spots of black that are driving me mad.

ggirl - the HG mould spray does actually get rid of black mould on sealant - try it, it's a miracle product.

hi - I wouldn't use cilit bang if you are pregnant, it is good at descaling in seconds but it made me have trouble breathing even later on when going back to the bathroom. It is so strong, I chucked all mine out now I have ds as I worried about him breathing it in. I used white vinegar and elbow grease on the taps and was surprised how good it was.

Limescale - Mr Muscle Limescale destroyer. Spray on and 15 minutes later, wipe off limescale, may need to apply twice if really scaled up.

Mould and mildew - Detol mould and mildew (bright green spray bottle). Amazing, spray on, leave for 15 mins, rinse off, may need to go again. All will be gone.

Get a bleach spray for the tiles, again spray on and maybe rub into the really grotty grout with a nail brush, again rinse off.

I used all these while prgnant, but ensure the windows are wide open. It may also be wise to use them one at a time. I tied a hanky around my nose and mouth.

They are the best bathroom cleaning tools I have along with Jif and I've tried lots.

Grot buster is another good one for grout, you'll get them all in your local supermarket.

thanks all. Does worry me gassing myself out with strong fumes. Will definitely try the cottonwool and vinegar trick and grot buster. Hopefully that shall get rid of it all. What about the orange stains on shower curtain- will a wash put it right? Maybe spray with vanish?

i use vinegar most of the time for cleaning, however i do use dettol mould and mildew remover if i have to (yucky grout) and good old bleach in the loo every so often.

just make sure you don't use them both at the same time - vinegar and bleach mixed creates chlorine gas (i am not going to admit how i found this out.........lets just say my floor was VERY clean and the fumes didn't last THAT long once every window in the house was fully opened)

Have ordered a HG Mould cleaner for my black grout marks- hope it works and thanks for the tips!

topsmart · 18/02/2011 20:29

I'll second the Grotbuster recommendation - is amazing. Barely need to wipe at all. Perfect for lazy buggers like myself who hardly ever clean the bathroom...

JenniL1977 · 18/02/2011 20:30

1 part bicarb of soda mixed with 4 parts bleach. Use an old paintbrush to paint on to whatever you want. Leave for half an hour then come back and give it a bit of a scrub, should come up lovely.

JenniL1977 · 18/02/2011 20:33

Oh, and your shower curtain- fill the bath with three or 4 inches of hot water, put in a wee bit of bleach or mildew remover and use a mop to squish your shower curtain round in it a bit. That'll get rid of that orange rubbish :)

ipredicttrouble · 18/02/2011 21:58

Another vote for Domestos Grotbuster.

bessie26 · 18/02/2011 22:18

the cotton wool & vinegar thing herbie suggests sounds good, I did a similar thing today with Ecover limescale remover & kitchen roll and it worked really well.

I'd say it's worth slinging the shower curtain in the washing machine before trying anything else - it always used to get rid of the black spots on mine - not sure about your orange stains though!

Rorogeorge · 07/03/2011 10:22

Just to update, I tried the HG Mould cleaner and my bathroom is now mould free! I needed 5 or so applications but a huge black blob has just vanished! thanks for the tips!
