Why does my washing machine smell?

I use both bio and no bio detergent on 30/40 degrees? Would it help to put a very hot wash on occasionally?

Mine's a bit ponky too. I think an occasional hot wash with bleach should sort it out (obviously no laundry in).

I'm going to do mine if I ever have a time when there aren't clothes that need to be washed......

It'll be old soap gunking up - run towels or bedding on a hot (>60 degree wash) occasionally. This site quite helpful on laundry issues here

Yes liquid makes the machine stinky. Run a hot wash once a month or so and apparently it is also good to leave the door open for a while after a wash to air it a bit.

Wash on 90 once a month with nothing in. Take drawer out and give it a good clean. Leave drawer and door open when possible to air through. Oh - and give the rubber a clean! I wipe through mine with a wodge of kitchen roll every so often. It holds water so that smells too sometimes.

If I am being very Kim and Aggie I wash dogs blanket. Wash machine on 60 with nothing in. Then take drawer out and clean it. Wipe rubber. Then do a wash on 90 with nothing in. Then my machine is clean!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine gets like that sometimes, and I use loo roll to clean down into the rubber bit, where the door shuts. It's not pleasant, but it helps the smell go.

Chillohippi · 10/02/2010 12:50

There was a thread about this last week. Liquid makes it smell so I've gone back to powder. Make sure you clean the drawer out once a week, and clean out the rubber seal.

Chunkyrice · 10/02/2010 14:11

If it's always been a bit whiffy, it could be that the hose isn't connected to the pipes properly. Especially if it's connected to the same pipes as the kitchen sink.

Always washing on low temp wash causes problems.

Use hot wash about once per month and put some biological powder/calgon tablet in .

Had same problem with my w/m and spoke with manufacturer. Followed their advice and problem seems better!

I've done a 90 degree wash with half a bag of soda crystals and my stinky machine smells better, but still not great.I've wiped between the rubber seal and the metal drum,by sticking one of those yellow and green scourers down there and wiping right around, and great wodges of gunky slime came out.God knows how it's gotten so bad,it is less than 4 months old.The old machine didn't get like this and I was washing washable nappies in that one.

Have put the rest of the soda crystals in and put it on another 90 degree wash.

NinjaChipmunk · 10/02/2010 22:00

a cup of distilled vinegar in the drawer on a 90 wash worked for mine, but i really notice a pong if the door if pushed closed/ nearly closed for a while.

PollyTechnique · 10/02/2010 22:04

I always leave the door slightly open to let the machine dry out thoroughly. I never get any smells.

But leaving the door open with small dc around would possibly create a new problem!

hillbilly · 11/02/2010 12:18

Thanks everyone - I will try hot wash + vinegar then leave door open!!!
