Net curtains? Or no?

I have scraggy nets in my front windows. They need to be replaced.

Or should I do without?

What do you think of windows with nothing to shield them from prying eyes when the curtains are open?

Thank you everyone.

I think I will take them down completely tomorrow and see how much someone would see, just walking past.

I had a look in The Range earlier, and they had some nicer looking nets in, more like a nice lace, plus voiles and muslin etc.
So I'll find something to replace it if I don't decide to do without.

No, no, no, no, no......!

Electra, do you have nothing at the window apart from curtains?

No, but we don't need anything because we have patio doors at the back of the house and nobody can see in iyswim...

I have recently taken down the nets in my house (rented). The window in ds' room is now bare but the one in the sitting room needs something as it is right on the pavement of a busy road and there are lots of people walking past all the time. I bought a pack of very inexpensive voile curtains from Ikea and that is working fine.

I have a pair of voile curtains in my bedroom that have little beads/coloured stones arranged in the shape of stars on and I love them!! I'm looking for some iron-on beads/coloured stones to attach to the one in the sitting room because I'm too tight to buy-- another one ready made.

That's why I'm averse to spending much herbietea, we don't tend to stay anywhere too long.

We're not right on the road, but on a bend, so people walking up the road get a good long look in.

I've noted that most houses on our street have either no nets/voiles etc. or blinds that offer little privacy. I don't know how usual that is though.

there seems to be areas of the country where net curtains are still very much the norm i remember going to Stratford and there were hundreds here in my part of Scotland hardly anyone has nets except old ladies no offence meant

bobthebuddha · 01/02/2010 21:41

..just been removing horrible greying polyester nets off our street-facing windows and replacing with proper (cotton) lace panels from the Antiques category in Ebay. You can get some really nice, fairly plain designs. I don't care what anybody says, I like 'em!

I have curtains stitched from sheer gauzy material, in various colours and patterns. Think they do the same job as plain white nets but look much nicer. (Still saving up for coordinated heavy drapes for the 'main' curtains).

Sorry to reboot this old thread but I was searching and came across this brillient forum. I was looking for net curtains and thought I would look at alternatives.

Anyway I'm surprised at the reaction to net curtains. It seems trends come in rather than something that looks good.

Blinds, espcially the vertical ones look awful from the outside. Like some manky old cab office or a solicitors.

I see myself as quite fashion conscious but don't see anything wrong with good old fashioned nets.

Pure white nets look lovely, especially on a sunny day and when washed the smell that flows through the room is gorgous.

Orissiah · 22/01/2011 17:42

I'm not a fan of nets either but we have them because I like privacy and the light muslin ones we got from John Lewis look quite nice and let loads of light in.

Coolmammy · 23/01/2011 01:04

Yes, get some new nets.

I have always had nets and I like them. I could never have bare windows. My nets have a modern design and look lovely. :)
