Just chosen lovely new cream carpet for our living room and dining room but with 2 children and DH who is prone to spilling his red wine on a Sat night now wondering if I'll regret it! Anyone out there with cream carpets who can give me some tips? Any amazing stain removers??!!

Cream carpet in a dining room ...why?

LowLevelWhingeing · 26/01/2010 13:32

God no, what were you thinking??! It's not like you can have house rules about 'no food in the, er, dining room' is it?

We bought a gorgeous cream carpet which looked like crap really quickly - even before DCs.

Put a very very very large rug over it. A multi-coloured one.

Or several sheets of plastic.

Or cordon off the rooms and only let people look at the lovely cream carpet.

Or only allow clear liquids and cream-coloured foods in those rooms.

We have some acquaintances who opted for an almost white carpet in their large sitting room.

It is terribly unwelcoming. No one (including them I think) is allowed to relax and eat and drink in there. . The woman gets really agitated if anyone looks like they might go in there with their shoes on.

Ridiculous (imo)

If you really like the thought of a beautiful cream carpet why not have it in your own bedroom and then you can avoid outdoor shoes on it, no drinks etc and it will probably give you more enjoyment.

cream carpet? you are very brave the thought makes me feel faint and panicky

The colour isn't stark, it's called camel - it's a berber weave carpet and actually light beige - and everyone's response has confirmed my doubts re. dining room. Still want it for living room though!

No - it will look crap very soon...even 'clear' juices accidentally trickled from childrens drinks will leave ugly grey spots...and you will be forever cleaning it! I'd rather go for sisal or something like that as suits modern or classic interiors imo...

loobs tbh I wouldn't even go there for any room in my house apart from my own bedroom perhaps. In our old house we had a cream/beige carpet in our living room/dining room. Was just a head ache. It just looked dirty. Unless you are super strict about no shoes, no drinks, no food etc it will look dirty. Ours also had stains from pens and crayons etc...
In our new house we have a living/dining room and have laminate floor. Would prefer carpet tbh but with kids it is just not practical!
Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear!!

My cream carpet experience is here

loobs2 · 26/01/2010 14:18

Thanks inthesticks! There seem to be no end of cream carpet nightmares! Think you have saved me both hundreds of pounds and a permanent stress headache - back to the carpet shop for me!

Actually I still love it in spite of the accidents. It has a very slight speckle which makes marks less noticeable and it brightens up a room which has little natural light.
I also now have a carpet washer
