Washing machine on the blink...

Ok, I'm about to call an engineer to see if he can fix our washing machine which just stopped working mid-cycle. We've had the machine for just over 10 years so won't be surprised if we'll need to get it replaced. I'd like to know which ones you lovely MNers would recommend or avoid. Cheers!

Oh and by the way, are washer/dryers any good? I only envisage using a dryer in an emergency or when I can't hang clothes outside.

I love my Miele. It's one of their more basic models and about the only thing I wish it did have would be a timer so you can set a delayed start.

It's just over a year old, no problems so far. Before that we had my mum's old Miele which eventually conked out aged 12 ish (after some very heavy usage by my mum for 11 of those years). They are fab.

My only experience of washer dryers was in a holiday let. The washing bit seemed ok, but the dryer programmes were rubbish. The clothes just got hot but never dry, I think it wasn't able to get rid of the steam or something.

If you tell me your budget and which features you want I'll have a look at the Which? Magazine website members section and let you know their best buys.....

trouble with washer-dryers is they only dry half a load at a time - not worth the trouble imo

Thanks for the replies

We've hit another snag - there isn't much space under the worktop for most washing machines which seem to be 85cm high, so I need a washing machine that's 84cm high or lower [sigh]

I feel your pain - ours had to be unusually shallow front-to-back to fit in the laundry cupboard - Hotppooiint in the ehnd
