Bath mats- how to rescue or not wreck new one

I HATE rubber bath mats but we need one as ds is 10mo and likes to move about in the bath. The first one we bought is now black and icky looking- it was blue! It has that nasty mildew mould type stuff you get in bathrooms.
How do I rescue it?
If it is beyond help how do I stop the next one from going the same way?

Stick in the washing machine regularly?

Lakota · 24/01/2010 21:39

You need to hang it up properly after EVERY bath. I have finally learned this after 3 such mouldy bathmats. I now stick it over the towel-rail and it's fine

Lakota · 24/01/2010 21:40

And I think you'll have to buy a new one, bleach just bleaches it to icky grey instead of icky black.

Bumperlicious · 24/01/2010 21:41

Ours always gets mouldy too, and I am mostly very vigilant about hanging it up.

I always hang ds's bath mat, but it still get mouldy in places. Last time I put generous amount of cheap thick bleach on the mouldy side and left it for a couple of hours in the bath. Then scrubbed and rinsed. It actually came up really clean and mould free!

Oh poo. Think it's wrecked then. Will get new one and take proper care of it as part of my new effort to be a cleaning fairy

you have to get down and dirty and scrub it with a brush

BelleDameSansMerci · 25/01/2010 12:54

I used mould remover spray and left it for a while and then put it in the washing machine on 40 degree wash. I then run the machine on empty before washing anything as am paranoid about any remaining spray stuff staying in the machine!

i used to have the same problem...but then i bought individual ones like these
and i dont seem to have the same problem, just stick them to the side of the bath and washe them when i wash the bath...think i bought a pack of 6 in lidl for about £3.

mrsflux · 25/01/2010 15:51

Tried washing it. It looked no different but there were lots of icky black bits in the machine! Yuck!
Like the idea of the little moveable ones Much cuter and less old folks home!

Mine is one of the clear plastic ones, they seem to get less icky than the opaque rubber ones.
