How long should I leave a new carpet in my 13mo room before putting her in there?

Sounds like a stupid question but, while I knew you were supposed to let carpets settle before vacuuming, I wasn't aware of any concerns with babies - but there seems to be a lot on the web.

Anyone know for sure if it's safe for a baby to go in a room with a new carpet?

My original plan was to let the pile settle for a week then vacuum over a couple of days then put her in. Is that wrong?

It only smelled for the first 24 hours by the way and doesn't now if that makes a difference?

Ds was back in his room the same day.
I hoovered straight away and frequently that week.

It wouldn't occur to me that it might be a no-no unless my kid was asthmatic/allergy prone.

I would bung her in straight away. And whats 'letting the pile settle'?

makedoandmend · 22/01/2010 20:13

Apparently the pile has to settle after being rolled up. And all the stuff on the net is about VOCs - basically toxins in the carpet.
Maybe it's just a worry with newborns

Oh, heavens!
Your kid will be fine.
If she was a newborn then fair enough but if she is allergy and asthma free and it is a room that gets normal levels of ventilation, then put her back in straight away.

DOn't get hung up on shite on th einternet.

I think she will be fine whatever you do, personally, I'd check with the fitter whether you shoudl vacuum as not vacuuming can sometimes be outdated advice depending on the carpet.

New carpets I've had were OK to be vacuumed immediately.

Personally I'd open the windows for a week, vacuum a couple of times and then put her in there.

The more deeply coloured the carpet it, the more it will smell - I think the dye is the smelliest stuff.

When ever we have had a new carpet my dc have rolled all over it. I personally love the smell of new carpet. I never thought it could be harmful.
