As part of our radical plans to create more space for the kids, dh and I are planning to make our bedroom into a dual purpose bedroom/sitting room. We need a really comfortable sofa bed or double day bed.

I'm not usually a fan of Ikea but this looks like it might work out well for what we need.

So I wondered if anyone had one and whether you think it would be comfy enough to be our bed every night?

Thanks.

Just off to put away the massive laundry back log. I will check back soon in hope.

Anyone?

I remember my parents having an Ikea single bed, the mattress was like a rock but the frame of the bed was surprisingly good quality.
The bed looks really lovely so much so I might buy one myself.

gosssipgirl · 17/01/2010 19:14

I had this bed when I was at uni.... the pull out bit was very flimsy IMO (sorry!)

Looks lovely though but I would not reccommend for regular use.

Also my one took 2 single matresses with a bit of a gap in the middle, but you might like that? I need my DH close to keep warm!

claricebean · 17/01/2010 19:15

Spidermama, we have one in our spare bedroom. It works well for us as we have more space day to day, and still have a double bed for visitors. It has loads of drawer space for storage too (e.g. one drawer holds the double duvet, two pillows and bed linen). I can't comment on its comfort as I've never slept in it, but guests who have say it is very comfy / just like sleeping in a normal bed. It's very easy to roll in and out too (though obviously you'd be doing that every day rather than occasionally, but still should be OK I think - better than a normal sofabed). HTH

I guess I need to do some research and make sure I get a decent mattress since I will have to give up my organic welsh sheep's wool mattress.

My mum and dad have this, we sleep on it when visiting them and I find it really comfy. True, it is 2 single mattresses pushed together, but the gap isn't too bad, and my mum puts a double mattress protector thingy on it when open, so I don't notice it at all.

I like it and want to get one for us when we move (living in temp accommodation til Sep).

Spidermama · 17/01/2010 19:24

So it's a bit flimsy for daily use gossipgirl? Did anyone else find the pull out bit flimsy?

Usually if I have to buy Ikea stuff dh has ways of making it stronger so perhaps.

I like the look of it.

The way I'm feeling at the moment I would welcome a gap between the mattresses.

claricebean · 17/01/2010 19:28

We don't find it flimsy but, as I said, we don't have to pull it out much (ahem, as it were)

ruddynorah · 17/01/2010 19:29

i have one you can have!! before we had ds we had one in the spare room (now his nursery). it isn't flimsy. the drawers are really handy cos you can put your bedding in them while it's being a sofa. and once it's pulled out to be a double bed it has the advantage of being a big double cos it's the size of 2 singles, not one and a half ish like most. so if you want mine let me know, it's in our garage awaiting ebaying when i have the time

Spidermama · 17/01/2010 19:30

Where are you ruddy and is yours white or black?

OP posts:
gosssipgirl · 17/01/2010 19:30

In fairness it was about 5 years ago and it has slightly changed since then so may well have been improved but I always found the pull-out bit quite flimsy and "hollow".

The drawers were very useful mind!

My dad has this in lime green his house in Berlin and it's very comfy but not such a looker!

Sofa wise it looks like you'd need a heck of a lot of cushions to make it comfortable as a sofa at the back.

ruddynorah · 17/01/2010 19:30

i am serious by the way, if you want it! £150, perfect condition. um, and we're near leeds ish. any good to you? save me bunging it on ebay? you probably have an ikea round the corner thought right?

ruddynorah · 17/01/2010 19:31

white

Spidermama · 17/01/2010 19:36

Ruddy I am after a second hand and would pay 150 BUT I'm in Brighton so not much good. Funnily enough DH is on his way to Leeds now but on the train not in the car.

Spidermama · 17/01/2010 19:37

Looks comfy gossip but not as nice as the other one. Also I need the big drawers to hide the bedding in during the day.

ruddynorah · 17/01/2010 19:46

what a shame! do let me know if you change your mind. i doubt i'll get it on ebay for the next couple of months anyway.

wuglet · 17/01/2010 19:54

We have one as a guest bed and it is fine.
we "upgraded" the mattresses (possibly sultan fangebo? can't be arsed to check)

It is very comfy. Think the only problem with regular use is that you might knacker the join (make sure you stay on one side or the other for any rumpy)

Have never actually used it as a sofa though

Tallis · 17/01/2010 20:14

I have one too in my dd's room which I lie on while trying to persuade her to stay in her cot. You might want to bear in mind that when two people are lying in it you are both parallel to the wooden bit at the back iyswim. IIt 's too short to lie the other way. Hmm this is crap explanation. what I mean is one of you will be able to lean back against pillows and be supported by the wood. The other person is entirely unsupported when sitting up in bed as when the mattress and second half of bed pulls out it has no headboard. and pillows tend to fall on th floor. Does that make any sense at all??????? I do love mine as do our guests (we move dd and it becomes a spare room) but might be slightly peculiar for all the time. Sorry for bad typing on mobile and no smiley things!

Tallis · 17/01/2010 20:21

...although from the sound of one of your earlier posts, perhaps you wouldn't mind too much if your dh fell out?

Spidermama · 17/01/2010 20:38

It's becoming a more attractive option all the time.

OP posts:
snigger · 17/01/2010 20:41

We had one, also around five years ago.

It became firewood 16 months later, however that may be more to do with DH's interpretation of construction guidelines than the physical make up of the bed.

we have this. It is very comfy and is the size of a kingsize.
