Farrow & Ball tester pots from Homebase

Does anyone know what finish these are in - modern emulsion or estate emulsion? Homebase didn't know and as I haven't used either before I cannot tell from what they look like on the wall. I like the colour and the finish of whatever it is that I bought!

they are in estate emulsion

NomDePlume · 16/01/2010 19:28

imo estate emulsion is a much nicer finish, more chalky and pigmented looking. The moden emulsion is more hard wearing/wipeable but the finish is not nearly as nice.

Thank you NomDePlume!

What happens if you wipe the walls then? Does the paint come off? Would it be enough to keep a few tester pots around to touch up mess? I love the colours.

you're welcome

My house is an homage to the F&B colour card, so I can help you .

You can wipe the estate emulsion but you have to be gentle and you may need to touch up a few areas so it is handy to keep any left over testers/ends of pots you may have.

What colour are you going for ?

[settles in for a thread of F&B porn]

Well, for my downstairs hall and stairs (which receive little natural light) I will use All White and cover the walls with framed pics.

For the upstairs hall which is brighter I was thinking Dimity but now I have tried it it looks surprisingly dark so may do some walls with Pointing. Both Dimity and Pointing look fab with my bargain Laura Ashley silk curtains that I got in the sale.

It will be sweet relief to get rid of the current colour scheme of lilac walls and tobacco yellow woodwork - yum.

Maybe Dimity will look lighter in daylight though...

I have dimity in downstairs loo (also no natural light) It is very light in RL and vaguely pink toned.

I have Savage Ground in my living room.
I have String in my hall
I have String and Cooking Apple Green in my kitchen
I have Cord in my bedroom, study, DD's bathroom (soon to be changed) and DS1's bedroom.

They are all variations on the same shade really (aside from the green, obv) just darker or lighter.

String and Cooking apple I can imagine looking good in my kitchen too.

Can I ask what you use on your woodwork? Do you use their eggshell or something else (cheaper )

I quite fancy doing a wall in the twins' room in Arsenic (the rest is Dulux Vanilla White) but Homebase didn't have a tester. I'm not brave enough to buy a big pot of such a strong colour without testing it!

i wouldn't go for estate emulsion if you have small chidren, you can just about wipe it but the colour starts breaking down if you do it too much (fond memories of pre-children chinese blue hallway and sudbury yellow bedroom...). our current toddler-infested place is modern emulsion. it's more sheeny than EE, but less than usual paint particularly in natural light.

living room is skimming stone which is beige or grey depending on time of day; dining room is cooking apple green (shout out to NDP); bedrooms are parma grey (pale blue); hallways are old white.

littleomar · 16/01/2010 20:06

ooh and check out the F&B website. you can get tester pots in every colour and if you buy like loads the postage doesn't seem that much . or even see where your nearest showroom is. they will talk you through seventeen virtually identical shades of ivory and you can see the £40-a-roll wallpaper (if only) up close. wow.

TheBossofMe · 16/01/2010 20:10

Oooh - an F&B thread - my whole house is decked out in it...Savage Ground, String, Cord, Mouse - its paint porn...!

PeasPlease · 16/01/2010 20:15

Yes, thinking about it I don't want to be stressing about toddler fingerprints in the hall do I.

I LOVE Chinese Blue littleomar.

Unfortunately, we live in NW Wales so no showrooms near us which is probably for the best seeing as how bizarrely obsessed I am with my colour chart

Peas - my skirting/bannisters etc are oak so they are not painted. The doors are white (not F&B, just bog std white)

PeasPlease · 17/01/2010 14:23

Would glossy skirting boards spoil the lovely chalky effect of the wall paint?

you are prob better going with a matte eggshell finish, less jarring
