AEG applicances - not as good as they used to be??

I am amazed that my 3 year old AEG lavamat has conked out as I swore that it was the business and I paid top dollar for it!! However a repairman has said that AEG is not as good as it used to be as it had been taken over by someone and is no longer German. Does anyone have any experience of a fairly new AEG machine not performing?

We had the same with a dishwasher - paid for top stuff and it broke down after 13 months. Aeg said tough!

Turns out they had merged with (I think it was, but can'r remember) Indesit and are churning out their goods with the AEG label.

That business move has done them no favours whatsoever.

Now have a Grojanje dishwasher (who?) repairman reccomended and he knows better than me.

Nope. AEG are now Zanussi parts, branded AEG. We learned this after our oven needed repairing after only 2 years of use. Electrolux also same company, if I remember correctly.

According to our repair man the brands that he ends up repairing least are Miele, Siemens, Bosch.

Oh and NEF also supposed to be good (for ovens).

I feel absolutely gutted (you probably feel worse Furball - after 13 months - you'd be forgiven for wondering if it had been programmed to do that just after the warranty expired!).

Rubber, I've heard same about the brands you mention - Miele is supposed to be so good that you can get 10 yr warranties on some stuff and I believe that bcos my hoover is about that old with no trouble.

Only trouble is that their big stuff are quite pricey but I suppose worth it in the long run. I'm going to have on the web to see if I can see any deals on any of the 3 you mention.

Resurrecting this thread, since my 11.5 month old AEG washer dryer finally died, last night. Serviceforce virtually had keys to our door, they'd been here so often (but not often enough for AEG to replace the infernal thing.) It had a faulty fan, then a leak. All the while, there was a problem with the easy-cares drying cycle. The condenser was replaced, along with the fan (again) and it still wasn't working properly. So they came back, yesterday, and replaced both sensors, a heater and a circuit board. I tried to use it, last night and it lost power, altogether.

So, now, we're without a washer until they do replace it (it's a week before an engineer can even come to confirm that it's not working). I thnk that if we'd held onto our previous model, which we replaced at 6.5 years old, last year because after heavy use, it had become a bit flaky (and a bit smelly) it would still be churning away, half working!

So, in short, we'll not actually buying AEG again, even though I've been pretty brand loyal to them over the years. Shame for them, since I'll be forking out £800 for a double oven, later this year. That'll come from the Bosch/Siemens/Neff family.

It's a real shame about AEG isn't it? My AEG washer was bought in 1993 & has had two minor repairs by DP & is still going strong. But I've read so many bad reports about their new stuff that I shan't touch them with a barge pole once my beloved machine finally gives up the ghost entirely.

If your machine is less than 12mths old I think the sales of goods act will mean that you can demand a replacement or refund...check it out.

TheHouseofMirth · 04/06/2010 22:00

Haven't got time to post much now but Google "6 year rule", it makes interesting reading if you can be bothered to pursue it.

Can I just add that I got a very quick replacement from argos on a two year old servis machine that was not repairable under the sales of goods act.
