How warm is your house?

Just nosiness, but I noticed today on teletext that we are recommended to have our homes at between 18c and 21c. So if you have a central heating thermostat thingie what temp do you set it too?

Toasty - no idea of the temp though.

BusyMummyof3 · 08/01/2010 20:03

Set to 19 but to be honest I still feel a bit chilly. Upstairs is also colder - around 17.

MitchyInge · 08/01/2010 20:10

we don't have a thermostat, the (single) radiator is warm though and the fire is just getting started

am surprised at how warm it has been in here lately given that it is about -40 out there

almost warm enough to take coat off

shockers · 08/01/2010 20:25

It's on 19 at the mo... off at night but we all wear jammies and socks in bed.
Usually it would be on about 17 and not all day. If it's a bit chilly we put more clothes on!

Elenio · 08/01/2010 20:29

22 but the outside temp is about 15 degrees!

daffodilli · 08/01/2010 20:36

Its about 20 atm, no thermostat, I would like it to be about 25/26 I'm always freezing! Thinking of emigrating...

MrsFlittersnoop · 08/01/2010 20:37

I've been monitoring our room temps with a couple of old room thermometers, just out of curiosity. We moved into my mum's huge crumbling pile house a few months ago and this is my first winter back here for 30 years.

DH is REALLY suffering - he has no prior experience of a big old cold house with completely crap heating. I bought DH a huge padded jacket to wear in his home office where the radiator is broken. He has a fan heater in there, but even so... .

We all gave/received thermal undies/jammies/woolly tights etc for Xmas, and we have rediscovered the utter bliss of hotty botties in bed!

It was a lot worse before the roof and top-floor windows were replaced this summer. I remember when I was a kid glasses of water would freeze overnight in the attic bedrooms.

The best Xmas present I ever received was an electric blanket when I was 13!

TheFallenMadonna · 08/01/2010 20:42

Ours is failing to reach 19 degrees according to our thermostat.

wollysocks · 08/01/2010 20:59

this should warm you up with laughter, after bills dropped lovingly on our mat this a.m. for gas and electric at about £140 approx for both, actually a bit more, DP actually turned the thermostat off and went to work! As if I thought and back on it went. sod the money, which he has to pay at the mo as am not working.

spilttheteaagain · 08/01/2010 21:56

My thermometer says it's 15.5 in here at the moment which starts to feel a bit nippy if you sit still too long

Shodan · 08/01/2010 22:14

Thermostat is set to 22 for the daytime. Rarely have the heating on at night although we did the other night, but lowered it to 15. Usually set to come on at 5.30 a.m and go off at 9.30 a.m, then on again for 4.30 till 10.30 but is on all day at the moment.

don't know what the temp is in the sitting room but I'm in a fleecy dressing gown, under a furry rug and my hands and nose are still cold!!

But, even if heating is on at night, our radiator in our bedroom is switched off. If DH is in the bed no heating is needed!. And if he's sleeping downstairs then I have a hotty botty.

gaelicsheep · 08/01/2010 22:20

I've no idea really as three different thermometers give wildly different readings. But here's a flavour

living room, about 17 or 18 max (large storage heater plus a convector heater on all day at the mo - ouch!)
hall - 10 with an oil-filled heater ON
upstairs - 5 or 6 (not currently heated as we're living downstairs while doing it up - I'm amazed it's not minus 5 or 6 tbh).

Like wheelybug we're trying not to think about the bills until the weather warms up!

nappyaddict · 08/01/2010 22:32

MrsFlitterSnoop Does the living room feel cold at 13?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2010 22:40

thermostat set at 18. it goes off at 9. Lovelay and toasty though. really good open fire going, a big blanket over me and two cats trying to sit on my lap.

gaelicsheep · 08/01/2010 22:42

Oh I do so miss an open fire.

cariboo · 08/01/2010 22:46

Ours is always too warm. Have begged to get it turned down - we have no control over our own heating - but none of the neighbors complain. They just open their windows. Bloody waste!

MissGreatBritain · 08/01/2010 22:48

Individual thermostats here. So living room radiator off while the wood-burner pumps out lots of lovely heat and my slanket keeps me very toasty (but def not hot IYSWIM ). Rest of the house about 17.

bronze · 08/01/2010 22:51

I'm about to put gloves on

nappyaddict · 08/01/2010 22:58

I have some real thermometers and I try to keep all the rooms at 15 degrees.

bronze · 08/01/2010 23:01

actually sod this I'm going to bed

paulaplumpbottom · 08/01/2010 23:06

we keep it at 22 degrees

cariboo · 08/01/2010 23:11

I heart you, bronze.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 09/01/2010 00:28

I have given up as it is so freezing. I am going to bed in a hat, gloves and scarf and will bribe the dog to sit on my feet

Tortington · 09/01/2010 00:30

30 degrees is what i set it to.

but i am freezing my tits off

i periodically fill up a hot water bottle and mn whilst putting my feet on it

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 09/01/2010 00:36

Thermostat is set to 21, turned down to 16 overnight (usually up at least once to BF DS and I can't stand being cold!).

The kitchen has no heating and we keep the door closed, it is 9 degrees in there atm. Upstairs is toasty, DS' room thermometer says 20-22. It is probably 19-20 in the living room.

I have got 3 layers plus a cashmere cardigan and sheepskin slippers on and I still feel a bit chilly. Going to go to bed in a moment, DH is in there already so the bed will be nice and snuggly
