How do you clean a wooden floor?

spokette · 08/01/2010 10:50

We recently moved to a house with wooden floors downstairs and I have only ever lived in houses that were fully carpeted. I have swept the floors with a broom but would like to clean them but not use water with a cleaning agent as this may cause them to warp and/or discolour.

Would be grateful for tips/advice please.

TIA

Method do a lovely wood cleaner which smells of almonds - yum! Available John Lewis, Waitrose etc

luckyblackcat · 08/01/2010 10:54

Sorry forgot to say, I sweep mine with a tiny bit damp flat cloth broom type thingy (from Lakeland), rinse it and wring it as dry as poss. Then squirt the method on and sweep/mop it over again.

We use mop and bucket, and whatever cleaning fluid is to hand

Although I do have some swanky Belle Maison stuff to play with, that I ot for christmas.

Ours are the actual floorboards and tough as old boots.

It is a parquet floor with real wood and has been done beautifully so I am scared of damaging it.

mine is real wood, when I say damp I mean barely so floor isn't getting wet but the dust is being picked up.

lbc,

could you link to the lakeland broom you use please. I have real wooden floors and I have been looking for something similar to clean them with.

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 11:09

spokette - it sounds amazing. I'd be fairly frightened to walk on it. How lovely.

You could use a barely damp microfibre cloth which seems able to deal with anything. A good one anyway. Then you would hardly need any chemicals at all.

spokette · 08/01/2010 11:15

Treedelivery it is absolutely beautiful hence my angst!

here

also supposed to be natural ingredients I think if you google method mop you will find loads of info

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 11:29

I think you should contact a parquet flooring restoration or fitting company. Just google and ring them and ask their advice.

You do see them in public buildings all buckled and rising, probably in response to heat and water. Wibble at the thought!!

DavidTennantAteMyHeart · 08/01/2010 11:31

Proper parquet sounds lovely.

We sweep or hoover the floor according to mess. Some rooms are done every day, others just once or twice a week. They are mopped once or twice a week using a flat headed mop, wrung out to be only damp. There are lots of these on the market. Get a spare head when you buy your mop as the crafty marketing folk change the shape of the mops (allegedly "improving") on a regular basis. Anything flat and easily wrung out does the job but I fancy one of these

I am currently using a bottle of ecover floor soap I found hiding in the wrong place. No idea if you can still get it!

The basic rule is use something gentle and don't leave it wet. Mop up spills straight away. I have old flat terry nappies which do the job brilliantly as they are very absorbent.

www.whittlewoods.co.uk/floor-maintenance.html this makes it sound even scarier. Think I'd go for plain water and maybe some teatree oil or something for a freshen up. It's not like afloor can ever be germ free so I don't buy into all that.

Maybe I should be nicer to mine......

BadRomance · 08/01/2010 11:36

I hoover my oak floors - then mop with stardrops and a microfibre mop.

BadRomance · 08/01/2010 11:38

Very diluted stardrops btw - all natural and only 80p for a bottle that last ages. I use it for all sorts of cleaning tasks

treedelivery · 08/01/2010 11:40

Stardrops. That reminds me of my nan, as does Zoflora.

BadRomance · 08/01/2010 11:41

Yeah mine used it too! Nans know best! (most of the time....)

Wouldn't copy her by eating dripping sandwiches haha

spokette · 08/01/2010 13:29

Many thanks. I will purchase one of those microfibre mops.

Where can I buy Stardrops because I have never heard of that?

Thanks for all the advice.

Wilkinsons. Almost certainly.

WOuld check before using it on your floor though.

luckyblackcat · 08/01/2010 15:08

Sory off in RL

I use this one

It is microfibre so doesn't actually need anything else, can be used dry or damp.
