What can I buy/cook to freeze so I don't have to go shopping (or cook too much!) with a newborn!

We have two freezers- currently we are only running one as we don't have enough stuff to warrant running both at the mo. I am due to give birth in 4 weeks. I want both freezers full to the brim of stuff so we can just eat out of the freezer for a few months while we figure out how these new fangled newborn baby thingies work.

DH is the cook in our house so not too worried but am thinking about doing the following:

Buying:
Pizza,
Chicken breasts
quiches
maybe some pies
kievs
chips
etc.
(sod health for time being!)

Making
soups
pasta sauces
maybe a lasagne or two
shepherds pie

what else can I buy or cook to fill those freezers (leaving space for my EBM of course!)

We may buy some milk to freeze to save trips to shops oh and maybe bread- what other essentials freeze well? I dont think cheese does does it?

bolognaise - you can freeze the pasta to go with it too
curry

fish pie too

Remember that you may be eating one-handed for a bit with a baby in your arms!

I therefore recommend a freezer full of curry & naan breads, and some bags of microwaveable rice - easy to eat with just a fork.

Bolognaise good but spaghetti is THE hardest thing to eat one-handed (unless you chop it up with kitchen scissors!)

Snacky things - savoury/sweet flapjacks, savoury/sweet muffins. Pasties!

There's a thread somewhere on here about freezing sandwiches - you could pop some in a toastie maker.

Part-baked bread lasts for weeks in the cupboard.

Good luck!

have you looked at www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
they have a freezer tips section in the "top tips and storage" section...sorry I'm not sure how to do links!

also just saw the curry recommendation.....if you plan to breastfeed (presume you are with the EBM), curry might not go down well...my DS had v bad wind & was uncomfortable when I ate curry, lentil soup or orange juice! Best to keep things quite bland...good luck!

chilli
goulash
you can freeze cheese

how big is your freezer?

SnotBaby · 05/01/2010 19:40

I often hear that, bounty007, but IME it hasn't happened. I eat a lot of spicy food & have exclusively bf both my DCs.

Cabbage, on the other hand..!

Thank you so much for all the fab tips- especially the bready ones- hadnt thought of that!

We have one chest freezer (the square type size not oblong) and one 3 drawer freezer.

Just put in giant sainsbury's order- exciting!

Well done

You might want to hang on to the order receipt! I have a shopping list from the week DC1 was born and it brings back more memories than the photos do! "Chocolate, cava, maternity pads, ibuprofen, TV guide, tiramisu, prunes, big pants..."
