Talk to me about placemats

I have had the same placemats since I was 24 - they have Chairman Mao dolls on the them .

I received some vouchers for christmas so thought I might get some more. What should I get?

We have a oak table cloth which is normally covered by a table protector and wipe clean table cloth so they table mats are really only used when we take the cloth off for special people.

Fabric ones? Hard ones?

I have absolutely no idea.

None.
They are naff.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/12/2009 19:04

Hard ones, much easier to just wipe clean.

overmydeadbody · 27/12/2009 19:04

Agree with moondog.
Better things to spend money/vouchers on I think.

fruitsticksinyourstocking · 27/12/2009 19:05

I covered some old placemats with red and gold Christmas fabric (stapled on the rear) for the table on the day, and now have some new ones.

selsworld · 29/12/2009 09:40

i use hard placemats usually, but at christmas i use gold chargers just to make the table look abit better with a red tablecloth.

SheikYerbouti · 29/12/2009 09:42

SixtyFootDoll · 29/12/2009 09:44

I am thinking of getting these

SparkyToo · 30/12/2009 19:20

Whatever, you go for just make sure they aren't going to slip around the table everytime you try and cut a tough piece of meat!

NorbertDentressAngel · 30/12/2009 19:26

We bought these ceramic John Lewis ones recently.

They were really nice but we had to take them back as they weren't heatproof enough. We wanted them to put hot dishes on straight from the oven (we don't use mats under plates) but the small print on the box said they weren't suitable.

We have a really rustic square wooden table and use fabric placemats (not for everyday kiddie meals, though). Looks so pretty...sigh My favourites are woven cotton in big blue and green stripes...

I have some navy and cream fabric ones from Jamie Oliver. Doublle thickness cotton and throw in the machine when grubby.

jesuswhatnext · 26/07/2010 16:15

i should hang on the chairman mao ones! must surely be collectable!

flibbertigibbert · 26/07/2010 21:02

I have a couple of sets which I made using some lovely fabric from Ikea and John Lewis. I just cut the fabric into rectangles and sewed a hem round the edge. SO much cheaper than buying similar ones ready made.
