Unblockable toilet!!! HELLLLLP!!!!!!!

Nearly a week later and trying every early morning to unblock blocked toilet - and STILL nothing moving! Any expert advice please?

I've done the plunger every day severaly times and hot water dropped from a height from bucket...flushed it ad nauseum, left it steeping in bleach and hot water.....

Nothing budging. This is a fairly new toilet that seems to block every fortnight, since it was put in, despite no one 'overloading it' or putting anything down it that shouldn't be there. In fact, not to put too fine a point on it, everyone flushes between wipes/ toliet roll, to reduce what goes down with each flush,

This block is unshifting and whilst we have another toilet in house, it's beginning to get difficult to be without the blocked one.

Do I need to call in paid help or has anyone got any tips?

it sounds like its a drain problem not a loo problem. Plunging usually does the trick if the loo is to blame...altho someone may come along with more wisdom than I.

IS there plenty of 'pressure' in the flush? Dh had to sort something out with our flush as nothing would go down properly unless you pumped the handle up and down

Getting technical, do the toilets share the same waste pipe or not? Because if one is free flowing and the other isn't it sounds like one is backing up so to speak.

Do you have any large grids on your property that are the inspection chambers for the drains?

Will check back on this later in case you can answer my questions. We had a drainage company come out, they were great but there is no way I would call them on a weekend if you can wait till monday but you may be able to clear it yourself.

had this problem a few weeks ago so went to the local hardware shop for caustic soda. instead of caustic soda they sold me this stuff that was 95% sulphuric acid!
I was terrified of using it but eventually did when the kids were out the house. worked a treat, cleared the blockage after lots of plunging, bleaching and inserting a long wire thing along the length of the pipe had done nothing.
If you do use it just make sure that there is no bleach in the pipes ( can create chlorine gas) and that the area is well ventilated.

Thanks for advice. Not at all sure if toilets share same waste pipe, I'm afraid. the new toilet has blocked regularly since fitting in place of an older one, in June/ July. I wonder if the plumber got cement/ debris down it?

Not had time to seek out the product you mentioned, performancegirl. Tried local supermarket which had nothing you could use down toilets.

As I run a full-time business singlehandedly and am single mum to 2 8yr olds, barely time to do anything yet. Did try another plunger go in early hrs of morning, before DSS were up - but still nothing budging...Very annoying! Will also now have to deep clean toilet room once it's unblocked, as all that plunging splashes everywhere (hence, can't tackly when fully washed/ dressed for work.

No idea when I'll get time for drainage company to call...it has to be when I'm not working but preferably when DSS not here either....

Have you tried the hand down the ubend yet. Gloved of course. I am rather an expert at getting round there, and getting the blockage out. Expect you have already tried this though, so maybe a plumber job.

madamim · 15/12/2009 14:25

Take the toilet off and see if there's a blockage that your not getting to, this happened to us and It was a rim block cage stuck, took the toilet off and problem solved

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/12/2009 14:30

Did you say you were putting wipes down it?

Solo2 · 15/12/2009 20:00

Thanks again...SantasFullAnd....I haven't tried the gloved hand down it yet. It seems to have a v v small hole going down, as a coathanger hook would barely go in at all.

Madamim, not sure what you meant by taking off the toilet and assume I'll need to get a plumber out for that.

FiveGoMad...no, there were no wipes down it and even no toilet roll, as what we do is flush BEFORE wiping (after a Number 2) because of how often it's been blockin and then kind of wipe with small amount of toilet roll, flush, wipe again and so and so on. So I'm afraid it's just, you know what....Sorry, this is rather gross...

Got to go, DS shouting for and at me....did manage to buy a gas canister plunger thing today at hardware shop. Was also recommended that Sulphuric Acid stuff someone else kindly mentioned but it looked far too corrosive on the toilet ceramic and pretty dangerous.

Will try the plunge/gas canister device tomorrow morning before children awake...

Thanks...

no dont get a plumper you can do it yourself, oh is diy illiterate, and I did it.

flush your loo and before the cistern starts filling pull the cock ball up and wedge something under it to stop water coming in.
any water in the cistern empty out with a jug.

empty the bowl using a jug, unscrew the bottom of the basin, unscrew the pipe leading down to the bowl from the cistern.pull the loo bowl away, using a bowl to catch any water from the waste pipe as you pull the loo bowl away and then you should see into the waste pipe and then you can see if anything is blocking it. should only take 30 mins max.

to re-attach push loo bowl back onto waste pipe, attach pipe from cistern to loo bowl, put screws in at the bottom of the loo bowl, and allow cisern to fill.

Good luck x

Sounds like you have an outside blockage to me.

We had this problem, and it was outside in the main drain. You need to find the nearest one to the house (hold your breath) and lift the lid and have alook. Will give you a clue as to where blockage is, then work backwards.

We have cleared drains with rods (or big old curtain track) or pressure hoses.....

Solo2 · 17/12/2009 13:57

Anyone following the fascinating saga of our blocked toilet will be thrilled to hear that I've just now unblocked it!! Yeah!!! - It's made my day - thus revealing what a rather pathetic life I have!

I used the gas canister thing I bought, not expecting it to work at all - and two quick goes and it's free-flowing again!

However, I suspect we have a builder's debris blockage somewhere that's making it block and block again with minimal wastage down it. So I think this is only a short-term solution - but at least it's useable again.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Not had time to find an outside drain or shift the entire toilet and I'm v impressed by you, madamim, as I'd always considered myself pretty good at DIY and v independent, as a single mum who does it all. But I'd baulk at the idea of disconnecting the whole cistern! If the children were out of the house for an extended period, I might have given it a try but they're on their Xmas holiday now and I've got them 24/7 for 3 weeks.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Simple trick that works everytime...same problem due to the 'new design' toilets...

Old mop in a plastic bag and stick it into the toilet that is blocked. Use the plunger effect movement and soon you should have a clear toilet. Do not flush and fill the toilet water if blocked. Only flush when unblocked and water level goes down....Goodluck!!

skymoo · 19/12/2009 20:06

We have that problem now and again. In our case it's usually dd putting too much paper down and the drain outside starts to overflow. Dp lifts the manhole cover thing off and pokes though the disgusting mess with a broom handle and this usually clears it. You would know if this is the problem as the tissue paper as well as pooey water starts to flood the garden. Gross!
