Family of 6 needing washing machine recommendations

4kidsandlovingit · 06/12/2009 10:57

Hi all just wondering if any of you can recommend a washing machin for me. Mine has given up the ghost and I really need a new one. I`m interested in one with at least a 7kg drum so I can fit quilts in.
Any ides?

I am a big John Lewis fan. One of theirs has a big drum, and ours came with a three year guarantee.

LG have just brought one out with an 11kg drum, I hear.

Northernlurker · 06/12/2009 22:41

Our whirlpool one has a big drum but I don't know what the model is. It's our second whirlpool and I've always been pleased with them.

Don't recommend Bosch. I read up all over the place before getting ours a few years ago. Bosch was the best, blah blah blah. But I find it crap. And they are really expensive. sorry, no recommendations - but will be watching this thread with interest for when we finally decide enough time has passed to justify getting a new one!

Squishabelle · 06/12/2009 22:46

4kids - I thought you already started a thread about this this morning?

ellokitty · 07/12/2009 19:39

I have the Hotpoint one.

"Hotpointdirect.tesco.com/q/R.206-8289.aspx"

Usually, I wouldn't recommend Hotpoint - but I'm told this one is actually very reliable. When I called out the engineer guy the other month because it was broke - he said he had been out to visit very few of these as they were very reliable. Turns out, the fault was a blockage caused by something I shouldn't have put in the machine .

You can now buy them to hold 9k and it has a specific duvet setting. Also, it is a very silent machine.

I have been very impressed with mine. HTH

We have this one and it's ace - also very quiet, very good on delicates, but cleans my absolutely filthy gardening clothes at low temperatures with no problem. And I do get covered in mud!

However, I would have liked one with a timer, so I could run it in the middle of the night on cheap electricity and hang up the clothes in the morning.

jicky · 09/12/2009 20:36

We have an LG 7.5 kg one, but dh spotted the new 11 kg one. You can do a single duvet in the current machine. Our current machine is slowly dying (it is 5 years old) so we might replace it with the bigger model.

AK1107 · 09/12/2009 21:48

I suppose it depends on your budget. We purchased a Zanussi ZWF16581W a few months ago as our old machine had given up the ghost. It costs around £390. We are really pleased with it and it got a relatively good score on Which? although not a best buy from what I can remember. I've got a family of 5 with newborn and its seems to keep up with the amount of washing and gives good results.

MadameMoe · 09/12/2009 21:52

Miele. Without a doubt, they are indestructible!

They are expensive but they keep going for at least 10, if not 20 years...

AK1107 · 09/12/2009 21:52

Forgot to add that the Zanussi also has a duvet program on it that gives good results. I've had to use it a few times as my 4 year old has only just started not wearing nappies at night. Just don't add too much powder like I did - oops

champagnesupernova · 09/12/2009 22:01

My sister has 5 kids and she Swears by miele (as do lots of mners) so I gave into the hype
Currently my miele washing machine has something wrong with its inlet and though it's under guarantee if there is something wrong with it that isn't under warranty the miele engineer call out charge is ninety two QUID!

MadameMoe · 09/12/2009 22:09

That's as may be champagnesupernova, but the warranty of a Miele is longer than the lifespan of most other machines.

Cheappinkfizz · 09/12/2009 22:17

DO you have room for a top loader? they are much bigger than a front loader and quicker too! a large load is done in about 20-30 mins

purpleduckUnderTheMistletoe · 09/12/2009 22:28

I agree pinkfizz - I miss toploaders

allthatglisters · 10/12/2009 16:55

My Miele washing machine has stood up to being used 2 or 3 times a day - has a very useful 30 minute express wash, and a digital time to the finish display which has been surprisingly useful. When you've got loads of washing you don't want to be waiting 2 hours for each wash to finish.

emsyj · 16/12/2009 15:29

I've got miele everything, their stuff is the best. My mum has a miele washing machine too and it's about 10 years old I would guess, but looks brand new. We bought a new one in April when we moved house but still have our old one in our previous house (now rented out) and it's been there 5 years with no problems at all . It fits tons of washing in it and things actually come out clean and almost dry, which is refreshing after nearly 3 years in a rented property fitted with a crappy plastic thing that just swilled the dirt around and then barely spun at all, leaving you with sopping wet and still-dirty washing. Ewww. Miele every time for me.

triplets · 16/12/2009 23:02

I have an LG so drooled tonight for the ad of their new one with the even bigger drum! Mine is a 7kg, 6 years old and having 11yr old triplets is on at least once a day, brilliant machine!

KitchenKate · 17/12/2009 14:02

There are machines up to 11kg in capacity but I don't know anyone who would ever fill one because you always need to sort into colours/fabrics. 11kg is the size of an industrial machine like they use in hotels.

I think 8/9kg is sufficient even for a family of 6 - they'll quite comfortably fit a king sized duvet or 40-45 mens work shirts. There are loads here:

miele.

we had one, adn I bloody miss it (it's still in our house, which is rented out now)

excellent wash, even at low temperatures. fantastic spin - most stuff came out nearly dry

useful count down timer. also has very useful lights which tell you what has gone wrong in which bit of the wash (eg rinse, spin, soap dispenser, etc.) not that you need these very often, if at all.

my uncle has had his miele washer and dryer (separates) for 30 years now . he is admittedly a batchelor, so not as many clothes go through, but he does loads of gardening/farming and also car repairs etc so he does put grimy stuff in regularly.

also my best friends mum has recently replaced her miele, after 16 years. not so good I thought (for a miele) - then I found out she had been washing horse blankets and pet beds in it daily for that length of time.

respect.
