How do you throw oil away?

If you have a lot of oil (say a bowlful), do you pour it down the sink, or is that a bad idea? What should one do with it?

I wouldn't put that much down the sink. How about a sealed plastic bottle and throw in the bin?

NO, not down the sink. It will block the drain and be very expensive to fix.
I do as bramshott says and pour it into a plastic pop bottle and put it in the bin.
If I don't have any bottles to hand, I make a bowl shape with some foil, line it with kitchen paper, pour in the oil and seal it all up and then put in the bin.

i make bird feeders with ours

pop some seeds in a yoghurt pot or something and then pour the hot oil on it - when its cooled it goes outside

Plastic bottles should be recycled surely

If a little does go down the sink, have the hot tap running at the same time.

I knew someone who always chucked oil down the sink in the cafe he worked at...
It resulted in the whole of winchester high street being dug up to find the blockage!

Bird feeders are good if it's a fat which will solidify, but if it's liquid - eg. used chip fat, then it needs to be in a sealed container of some sort really.

Yes, with just a little eg. a pan which is pretty oily, I would pour down the sink but follow with a squirt of washing up liquid and a good dose of hot or boiling water. With fat that will solidify eg. from meat, I pour it some used packaging and wait until it's cool before binning.

I mop it up with loads of kitchen towel, then chuck.

It's olive oil, but I'll put in foil with paper - thanks for the idea. The bottles have to go clean and dry in the right place here or the rubbish police come knocking!
