Non-ironers who also don't tumble dry or fabric condition ...

Do you still have to iron linen stuff, pleated stuff, shirts, school uniforms, rugby tops etc?

If not how do you make them look crease-free without ironing them?

My dd isn't school age yet and dh only wears shirts sometimes. I hang them up as soon as they come off the line and put them in the wardrobe. The creases seem to drop out of them. The wardrobe contains the water heater though so I think the heat helps.

I occasionally iron linen stuff if it looks ridiculous.

moocowme · 13/11/2009 21:33

very ocassinally if i did not take something out of the washin machne as soon as it finished, give it a good shake and hang it up nicely, i find i might be tempted to iron something. but usually hanging it in a steaming bathroom overnight helps. otherwise it usually flatterns out by the time i get to work. i do have a rather bohemium dress sense so i carry it off ok as a teacher.

cookielove · 13/11/2009 21:44

i don't iron, tumble, or add fabric condtioner. I shake it out before i hang it up, and i would never buy linen, shirts that needed an iron, nothing with a pleat, because i am lazy and i don't care

CarGirl · 13/11/2009 21:45

Don't let them spin on top high speed in the washing machine. Get out of machine immediately when cycle finished, shake and hang up on hangers to dry.

UniS · 13/11/2009 21:46

I don't buy it. OR, i get DH to iron it, he DOES iron a he chooses to wear cotton oxford shirts and chinos for work.

Once boy starts school he will be wearing unironed polo shirt and sweat shirt and non iron trews .

nappyaddict · 13/11/2009 21:49

They have to wear shirts at DS school

OP posts:
CarGirl · 13/11/2009 21:52

M&S do no-iron school shirts

cece · 13/11/2009 21:56

None of these things need ironing if you shake and fold....

cece · 13/11/2009 21:58

Oh yes and DD has M&S non-iron shirts.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 13/11/2009 22:01

you don't buy linen for a start.

the rest is flattened/stretched/collars straightened out and put on the airer.

or always wear a size smaller than you actually are...that takes out the creases

TrinityHasAVampireRhino · 13/11/2009 22:01

I tumble but I never take stuff out quickly from washer or tumbler

I dont fabric condition as it irritates the girls skins

I never iron A SINGLE thing

dh ironed a shirt for a funeral once

maybe we sometimes look crumpled

but we are good people

nappyaddict · 13/11/2009 23:13

cece is there a particular way I should be folding shirts, pleated skirts, pure cotton trousers etc? I do shake and fold but they still end up creased. Presumably I am shaking them at the right time (when they are dry?)

OP posts:
lowrib · 13/11/2009 23:49

linen stuff - don't own any

pleated stuff - ditto

shirts - if mine, for work, then yes if they look creased.
My DP wears some cool shirts, these are not ironed.

school uniforms - DS is too young to have one

rugby tops - no, would not bother

but we are good people"

moocowme · 14/11/2009 06:28

forgot to mention i do own several linen items but have never ironed them. shake, hang well and they are fine.

Wallace · 14/11/2009 07:20

My new motto: "maybe we sometimes look crumpled
but we are good people" Thanks TR!

dollyparting · 14/11/2009 07:36

People who wear linen always look a bit crumpled anyway.

TrinityHasAVampireRhino · 14/11/2009 11:21

@ wallace

isn't linen so annoying that even once you have ironed it then putting it on and wearing it seems to crumple it anyway

I avoid it

cece · 14/11/2009 18:44

If hanging on the line then shake before you hang them up. The aim is to get the creases out. Then fold or hang as required. So linen trousers get hung in wardrobe, t-shirts folded and put into drawers. School uniform is so fake material it doesn't need any ironing...

If tumble drying then fold asap after cycle finishes.

cece does that work for normal shirts (not the non-iron ones)

OP posts:
cece · 15/11/2009 16:14

DH's work shirts do get ironed, but he does them so not sure!

said · 15/11/2009 16:17

I only iron stuff that absolutely has to be ironed. And very little does. Certainly not uniforms, shirts (don't iron partner's stuff anyway). Folding and wearing stuff means the creases drop out.

nappyaddict · 15/11/2009 21:27

said Does your partner have normal shirts though or non-iron shirts? What things do you find do have to be ironed?

OP posts:
SparkyToo · 19/11/2009 21:10

I don't iron boxer shorts but do iron the boys shirts and trousers - they're pretty small anyway and only take two ticks.

The big issue for me was having to iron the duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases, so I went for this easy care bed linen and now don't bother ironing it and it really doesn't look so bad, unlike my 100% cotton bed linen which can just be so difficult to keep looking nice.

FimboFortunaFeet · 19/11/2009 21:16

I iron what I need the night before. All clothes get put away in wardrobes when dry. Don't have a tumble dryer and don't use fabric conditioner.
