Bleach is the only way!

When you've washed them try hanging them out to dry in the sunshine - that can often bleach stains out too

NormaStanleyFletcher · 24/09/2009 18:27

I soak in oxy stuff then wash with a whitener sachet thing.

Gets most stuff out

rubyslippers · 24/09/2009 18:29

BIWI is right

i soak in bleach and then wash with BIO powder

also adding Vanish to the wash

I have bought 5 shirts as well so we can have on rotation

mum2samandalex · 24/09/2009 22:33

Is that any kind of bleach??? Always been scared to use it.

Are proper shirts uniform?
They are alot easier to keep white.
In my humble experience.

Hassled · 24/09/2009 22:38

You have to bleach them - it's one of my life's obsessions. Tomato sauce on a white polo will not shift without bleach. And I hate bleach.

Hassled · 24/09/2009 22:39

Yes, your bog standard bleach. Heavily diluted - a few squirts in a bucketful of water.

Ponders · 24/09/2009 22:41

After the first few days of pristine whiteness I just resigned myself to having permanently grubby children - much less hassle

Having said that I saw a new helpful hint today - apparently WD40 will shift tomato stains???

rubyslippers · 25/09/2009 09:31

you can use any bleach

Fizzylemonade · 25/09/2009 13:13

Make them wear the dark school jumper on top works for me

I have very neat ds1 so his shirts are still very white. Am dreading ds2 starting school.

Fizzylemonade · 25/09/2009 13:16

Oh didn't mean to press post just then.

I buy M&S stain defence and they do offer some protection.

I am very proud of my whites so if they were a bit grubby I would bin them and buy more, but only in summer when ds1 wouldn't be wearing a jumper to hide stains

wonderingwondering · 25/09/2009 13:18

If you dry clothes in fresh air/direct sunlight it sometimes helps lift stains.

ShrinkingViolet · 25/09/2009 13:51

direct sunshine takes out tomato based stains

2greatboys · 26/09/2009 09:02

I sometimes soak mine with a scoop of napisan. The one stain I can never get rid of is that whiteboard marker pen .

noddyholder · 26/09/2009 09:05

I have to bleach them and ds is 15! Then I have to rewash in non bio or he itches like mad.Grey polo shirts is one of my bug bears they have to be white! The gap ones although £ stay very white and good shape for ages.

YeahBut · 26/09/2009 09:13

The dc's white polo shirts have a blue logo and blue edging on the collar. Would a heavily diluted bleach take out the colour on those as well as making the shirt white?

noddyholder · 26/09/2009 09:16

It might. What about that oxy bleach stuff that doesn't fade things Ace i think its called

CybilLiberty · 26/09/2009 09:31

My ds's are virtually disposable. I buy them in bulk from Primark and he wrecks them so I just chuck and replace. I cannot get them clean

welshdeb · 26/09/2009 09:59

Second bleach. Fairy green soap rubbed hard into dampened stain work quite well to shift most stains. Shout Pre wash spray is good too
I think you should also wash with bio powder for whites as it has mild bleach and optical brightners.
However there are some stains which never shift like White board pen and PGA glue

ThingOne · 26/09/2009 10:31

The best way is have a child who not only prefers to keep their jumper on all day, but one who doesn't like chocolate. Then you only have to deal with the occasional ketchup/mince/spag bol stain. And given said child keeps jumper on unless very hot outside, the sunshiney season coincides with these stains very nicely. So far.

How do I get my second child to do the same?

Ponders · 26/09/2009 11:15

PVA glue will come out, but only in cold water & only first time round. Once it's been in hot water it's fixed.

soak overnight in cold water

The problem is spotting it before you chuck whatever it is into the machine (unless you inspect everything first with a magnifying glass)

Lilyargin · 06/02/2011 14:13

What is all this ds stuff? Does it stand for something?

Seona1973 · 06/02/2011 14:36

ds = dear/darling son

loopylasslou85 · 02/11/2013 00:07

To get the white board black marker pens out...try spraying with hairspray! :) I always do this (& often!) Also try scrubbing the mark with a toothpaste & toothbrush! :) hope that helps!

I've not tried it but apparently soakong white shirts in Milton works wonders. Saw it on a Hinch Facebook site.
