school trousers - do you turn them up?

did not buy dd (aged 12) new school trousers, she is wearing aged 11 which fit perfectly, tried on several aged 12 which were too long.
of course my mum says she would have turned them up, and always turns up her own trousers.
she often buys my dc's school trousers and generally turns them up.
i am not sure if i am cross cos I should have bought them and known to ask her
or do what i planned, and buy them when they actually fit?

I have had to turn up dds this year as there seemed to be a huge difference in length between the 9yo ones which were flapping half way up her calfs and the 10yo ones which would have polished the school floors nicely.

that is a good reason ohyou..., well frankly you had no choice.

Well if age 11 fit her perfectly, she might as well stay in those till she needs to go up a size. I tried turning up trousers for DS once, but they looked such a mess when I let them back down again that I slung them out and bought new ones anyway.

thanks for your response

i spose i wondered if people bought them long on purpose, turned them up and then let them down - so they lasted.
but there appear to be not many people interested willing to comment..

I don't do it on a regular basis, but I have on occasion turned up both school trousers and summer dresses. Sometimes because the next size up is cheap in a sale and I know I can get an extra year's use out of them.

But I have had very strange looks from friends when I confess to adapting hemlines, so I don't think many bother.

I usually turn up trousers for my son, who is very slim.

it's called thrift.
