I am sick of slugs INSIDE my house!

MrsSeanBean · 20/06/2009 09:25

We have a 1920s brick house.

Slugs somehow get inside the house - mainly at night - and I come down to their horrible slimy trails all over the floor every morning.

I called the pest control people at the council who advised me to lay cracked eggshells outside the air-bricks, but still the problem persists. Aside from laying pellets inside the house (dodgy), I don't know what else to do. Sometimes I come down in the night to get a glass of water and find the slugs crawling around. My patience and sanity is wearing very thin.

(a) Does anyone else have this hideous problem;
(b) if so, how did you solve it?

We had this in our victorian terrace. They were coming up through the floor. We moved.

cozietoesie · 05/05/2015 08:13

Go for a wholesale eradication programme - garden and all. If you don't, they'll come in looking for food unless you have a completely sealed house environment. And they breed (like stink) so it will likely take you a couple of years and not overnight.

cozietoesie · 05/05/2015 08:16

Chatting with my neighbour last year and she said, musingly, 'It's funny - they say that slugs are on the increase but we just don't seem to have a problem round here'. (Terraced houses.) Little does she know.

TinksRVN · 21/06/2015 01:10

We have them in our living room, literally at my wits end! Does anyone know if the little white mites that live on the slugs are harmful? Worried about them being on the carpet despite me hoovering and my children ingesting them somehow! I've recent planted flowers in the garden and have been on slug watch twice tonight and removed many many slugs from all flowers! I hate these little creatures! :( x

cozietoesie · 22/06/2015 10:40

It can't be done that quickly in my (sadly extensive) experience so best to settle down for a long campaign.

Are you going out late at night with a torch? (They don't usually appear en masse until darkness is well established.)

SapphireSeptember · 02/09/2015 00:27

I am so glad I'm not the only one! I'm currently living with my in laws and they have loads of slugs (I went to make a cup of tea and there was one crawling around near the sink, yuck!) I squealed until my fil came and removed it. This is the first one I've seen out when the light is on though. Anyway, they have a disgusting kitchen that I don't have the energy to clean, it would take a small army to deal with so I'm just going to have to deal with it until we can afford to move out. (The flat I lived in before had weevils, biscuit beetles, carpet beetles that drove me insane because the place was infested, mould everywhere and mushrooms growing along the skirting boards and window frame, landlord did sod all about until we got kicked out for 'not looking after the place' even though I tried everything I could think of. Grrr.) That turned into a bit of a rant, sorry! But if I see s!ugs I salt them, I have no mercy! evil cackling

lulu1948 · 26/07/2016 14:30

The only way to get rid of slugs in the house is to find out where they are coming in and block it up. I have tried salt, gel killer and putting the blighters outside but I have now found a tiny space between my wall and the skirting board by following their trail and i have blocked this up with Polyfilla and no more slugs. Good luck as it is horrible to come down to slimy trails or worse to stand on one of these crawly things

Jayfee · 04/08/2016 10:01

Slugs nightlyIn lounge on ground floor and occasionally in shower upstairs. Nearly wiped my face with a face flannel from shower whch had a big slug on. Downstairs I have thrown lots out, salt on on wall in desperation - now a big stain on wall from dead slug. I pg slug pellets in lounge but whatever i do they come back

gpino · 20/08/2016 08:44

Hi
I found that slugs where coming in through my air vent in the kitchen.
We have taped up the vent and no more slugs

gpino · 20/08/2016 08:49

hi mine where coming through the air vent in the kitchen

Jayfee · 21/08/2016 22:35

Thanks I will try that. I am not sure whether it will cause moisture problems though...found one in my en suite bathroom this morning..ugh!

Vintagegirl1 · 04/09/2016 10:11

We have ben finding s,ug trails in living room and hall for months but never seen one. Tonight 8 went downstairs and happened to turn on living room light. Fuck me there were about 30 of the bastard! I have salted them and look forward to scooping up the dead corpses in morning. This house is minging though as we have 30 year old kitchen/carpets-thanks dh-so am used to dealing with creepy crawlies.

Magrijade · 02/11/2016 05:15

I have come into the kitchen at 2am and found 10 all around the skirting :( I've come out now (5am) there's 3....I'm vegan so I don't want to kill them....why only at night and where do they go after? I also have tiny ones in the bathroom which I've never even seen before?

My babies due next year and I'm worried that this isn't very hygienic!!!

I have this problem in my 1930s house.

Slowly. Slowly they're going now. I put plastic covers on all the air bricks outside. Pulled out the fireplace surround and sealed it with foam. Went behind kitchen cupboards and used foam to seal holes from lazily installed appliances.

It's really awful. If you are desperate then leaving the light on at night stops them but that's just temporary prevention really.

These are the covers I've put on the air bricks.

MissMargie · 02/11/2016 06:08

As I understand it slug pellets attract slugs, so if you sprinkle them outside the house they should be attracted out to the pellets. Perhaps do a google search to find the most effective slug bait.

If you block up vents you will get more damp so not a good long term idea.

I grow veg and have no qualms about sprinkling slug bait around. Only thing is it might be risk to birds or cats but after decades of gardening no poisoned cat has been found near my garden. And you can buy bird friendly stuff.

Ditsy4 · 02/11/2016 06:15

We have the same problem. DH gets really worked up about them. In fact the only thing other than football I have ever seen him worked up about!
I bought him 50 ways to kill a slug one Christmas.

We have a stone house and they get in around the inglenook.come down to find silver trails on the dark blue carpet. We put slug pellets behind wood burner but it doesn't always get rid of them. Beer works in the garden and they are attracted to the smell. I have chickens now and we have a lot less.
They are horrible irritating things.

Musiclover24 · 07/06/2017 01:05

The best way to get rid of them is to use salt

colthebear · 16/06/2017 15:50

I've come on here cus I wanted to try and help some people. We had slugs in our new house over a year ago and we still get the odd one (squeezing through a closed window would you believe!) but we used to have them in the kitchen every night and we've put a stop to it almost entirely by installing Mousemesh airbrick covers. There are probably others on the market but we used these. They are amazing!

Hi all, not a mum but sympathise with everyone here. I bought a Victorian terraced house a few months ago and was appalled, not just by the extremely poor condition the previous owners left it in, but also by discovering slugs at night! I'm horrified, disgusted and somewhat depressed about it. I've had to replace the floors, doors, skirts, plaster, renovate and repair every single thing, then find out out there are night-nasties to contend with. I'm so worked up about it I've decided to go to war and (try) stop them permanently I think it's possible by sealing up the gaps, luckily (I suppose) I already have the floor and skirts up and off, and I've bought a 25 kilo of salt and kilo's of slug killer all which will be poured under the floor liberally before I seal up all the gaps around the floor and wall with expanding foam. I've done one room successfully. I'f this is an option for you (flooring up etc) then go ahead with this method......I urge you! It's so satisfying seeing the gaps close in on the little bastards and harden to a solid, yet still flexible seal. I've found by sticking the nozzle in the gap at a couple of inch intervals and giving 1 or 2 second bursts only, the foam does not go too wild. Excess can be cut off nicely with a Stanley knife when hardened after half an hour. I'm guessing you could mask the area off if you have flooring down. My caveat is this is not for the feint hearted, it can be messy and damage things.......but this is war.

Anyway, I'm glad (but also sorry you have the problem) as well as me, I don't feel quite so alone! And I also feel better for this little rant in my break at work too. Good luck to you all, I hope you get over your terror and don't let the fkkers get you down........

Eilidh76 · 04/09/2017 01:32

Hi what was the slug repellent spray you found online? Dinky stinky?? I'm having problems to with slugs tried putting salt down tonight but spray would be easier for indoors

jillyrat · 07/11/2017 07:49

The answer to this problem is simple. Slugs are nocturnal and hate light. I realised this when they never came into my kitchen, dining room or lounge when lights are on so I put this to the test by leaving my cooker hood light on all night in the kitchen, a small light in the dining room and a laptop shedding light in the lounge. Nothing for 3 nights and then one slug trail in the kitchen but ONLY in an area where the small light didn't reach - but that slug had strayed no further, judging by the lack of trails. I am now patenting a low energy, plug in solution so you can plug them in all over the downstairs while you sleep, keep the slugs out and not spend a fortune. Watch this space...

HPW64 · 22/06/2022 14:19

I had the disgusting problem of slugs getting under my kitchen door at night heading for the cat food. Since I bought this, all I can see are slug u-turns on the map outside. They hate it! Hooray! www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08DDCN7YN/ref=pe_27063361_487055811_TE_dp_1

Mat, not map...

I know this message is some years old now but I'm sure people are still experiencing the same awful problem of slugs getting into their home. Me too.
Locate the entry point if you can. Usually this is the air vents, in which case, cover the air vents tightly with a 1mm holes gauge/wire, netting cover. This will keep spiders, slugs, cockroaches, mice and other pests out of your home. In our case, the upvc doors had dropped in the heatwave leaving 5mm gap at the lower closure of the door making an easy entrance at night for slugs and spiders. We have filled the gap with draught excluder until we can afford to get a new door. Check all doors and windows are tightly sealed. Hope this helps. 😀
