Butchers Block worktop- how do I get it clean?

I inherited a solid wood butchers block kitchen worktop when we moved in. I don't think it was finished off properly and has become very faded/stained/generally grubby. How on earth do I clean it?

Most cleaners aren't suitable for natural wood. I'd really appreciate any tips you have. Thanks.

I know that vegetable oil will get rid of any smells on it and I think, but not sure, it will also clean it. Put the oil on the board, wipe it over it, then rinse. Should be fine.

HANG ON! Just found a link. It's not vegetable oil. Have a look on here and see what you think.

sounds like you need to sand the whole lot done and treat. you need to do this every 6 months or so anyway.

I had one for years with no problems but I treated it every 6 months with linseed oil and that seemed to protect it from staining.

I'd lightly sand it down and then treat it.

johnworf- I couldn't click on that link. What was it for. Yes, I think I'll need to sand it- what a job that will be one of the lengths is 8 foot long! Will be worth doing though. I take it it's best to use a very fine sandpaper? I've got some lemon oil I could use after.
