Can I get scratch marks off my slate fireplace?

Just some kids round for DS's birthday and some little bundle of joy has scratched my new slate fireplace. They are not deep scratch marks but they are visible.

Am I doomed?

You could try rubbing it with slate oil. If they are only small marks you may be lucky. See here www.tableauproducts.com/categories/Slate-Oil/38
