Dishwasher vs tumble dryer

I know this is deathly boring but...

our dishwasher died yesterday and we only have room for one appliance so..do I get a dishwasher or a tumble dryer?

We've got a 4 week old so it makes sense to get a tumble dryer but I hang out the washing in the summer/spring anyway so would only use it for part of the year. However, used to dry washing in spare room which is now the nursery and I hate the thought of washing hanging all over the house in the winter.

More likely to use the dishwasher more but then I think we've just got lazy and it wouldn't harm just to wash everything up!

As I said, I know it's boring but any tips would be greatly appreciated!

dishwasher.i got one after having 3rd child when my uncle pointed out that the best thing about a tumble dryer is that they are cupboards to shove dirty dishes in.

we have both -dishwasher and tumble dryer brecause in our old house theres was no heating and it was damp and mouldy so clothing took a week to dry!but in our new warm house (i love being warm)we hardly use it,only for things like i suddenly remember ive not washed school uniform etc!we hang outside or use a clothes horse.

I couldnt possibly live without either. But if I was able id go without the tumble dryer.

Tumble dryer a godsend when you can't hang washing out (most of the time!) Dishwasher equally so (quick/hygienic etc), i'd find room for both if you can, esp with baby on board!

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 08/06/2009 19:32

You can't tumble dry everything anyway...I'm not sure I could choose tbh. Could you not get a small counter top dishwasher and a tumble dryer?

Meglet · 08/06/2009 19:33

i have both in a tiny house. A slimline dishwasher in the kitchen and a tumble dryer in the tiny porch. As much as I love the dishwasher ( i only buy stuff that can be dishwashed) I think I need the tumble dryer more. When the dc's have a vomiting bug I know I can get everything clean and dry quickly (and usually during the night), thats a big plus point for me. I don't have enough space to dry clothes in my house, the clothes horse invades space in the living room when it's up and I need the heating on to get it dry.

I would always choose a dishwasher.

Ohforfoxsake · 08/06/2009 19:34

Dishwasher, you use it every day, dryers you only use every few days and not nearly so much in the summer. And you can't store a days worth of dirty dishes in a dryer, can you?

LoveBeingAMummy · 09/06/2009 08:56

Dishwasher for me too

BonsoirAnna · 09/06/2009 08:59

Dishwasher.

Geepers · 09/06/2009 08:59

I'd hate to manage without either, but I'd definately keep the tumble drier if I had to make a choice.

I'd hate to have to hang washing to dry, and rely on good weather, or have washing draped all over my house.

OrangeFish · 09/06/2009 09:09

Dishwasher.

CherryChoc · 09/06/2009 09:12

Dishwasher - we have that, and not a tumble drier, and it's fine. It is a bit of a pain in the winter trying to dry things, but it means you get organised with the washing if you don't want things drying everywhere.

MrsKitty · 09/06/2009 09:18

It's a tough call, but I think I'm going to have to go with Dishwasher - I honest;y think that once you've had one it'd be very difficult to go back!

If you were to decide to go for a washer/dryer I'd say to go for a top brand like Miele as hotpoint/zanussi/similar are an utter waste of money and are completely useless! (IMHO...and after several hours of phonecalls to Comet customer services a few years ago after my washer/dryer broke 5 times in the first 6 months of having it!)

Bramshott · 09/06/2009 09:30

A tumble dryer is useful but a dishwasher is essential IMHO!

GoodWitchGlinda · 10/06/2009 11:39

Dishwasher every time. You can peg washing out when it is dry, and when it is not, it is a good excuse to put your heating on and warm your toes at the same time as drying your washing on the radiators. A tumble dryer won't warm your toes, now will it?!

I just saw it called 'laundry buntin' on another thread and it warmed my cockles and made me want to spread it round my radiators right now just for the fun and the lovely clean smell!

With washing up, you are always either creating it, looking at it piled up waiting to be done, doing it, or looking at clean piles waiting to be put away.

With a dishwasher, you no longer have to look at it, or do it! All you have to do is put it away! Who can argue with the genius of that??
