How clean is your kitchen?!

I spend over an hour a day (almost 2 a day) cleaning up the kitchen throughout the day.

DH will cook and leave an awful mess (and i mean really awful mess. ) This takes me almost an hour to clean up involving : Dishwasher, cleaning the hob, cleaning the tiles behind the hob, scrubbing and wiping the surfaces, sweeping the floor, washing floor and cleaning sink etc.

If your kitchen is relatively clean all of the time, how do you manage it?

Would love to have more of an evening to relax, rather than clearing up DHs mess. (And before you say get him to clean it up, he won't!! )

Mine is always spotless. Because:
(a) It is tiny. Really weeny. Half the size you're imagining. So I have to tidy as I go.
(b) My husband does all the washing up. It's like a hobby for him.
(c) My cleaner cleans it thoroughly twice a week.

Mine looks awful

will watch this thread

I sweep twice a day, I have a huge old fashioned really wide broom from a hardware store.

I have antibac wipes on hand all the time and keep on doing that too..

Dh cleans too, especially if he has made a mess. the worst thing is when pans have boiled over and the stuff has dried on the hob.

How much extra stuff do you have in your kitchen? I have no other crap in mine of I can help it, and my worktops are pretty clear. This makes cleaning up quicker

LovingTheRain · 29/05/2009 12:43

Worktops are clear too, will try and post pics on my profile if i remember how!

What on earth is your DH doing when he cooks that means you have to do so much cleaning up afterwards? I know you say he won't clean up his own mess, but maybe if he had to just now and then he'd see why throwing food over every available surface causes unnecessary work.

(You're not my sister are you? Her DH cooks most of the time, and I think he uses every single pan and utensil every night...)

But I think the only answer is clearing as you go, and having everyone else who uses the kitchen do the same. eg putting dishes in the dishwasher, wiping the toast crumbs off the surface (carefully, not onto the floor...)

I either clean up after dinner - dishes into the machine, surfaces wiped over, any handwash dishes into a neat stack by the sink, or else do it all in the morning, including setting off the dishwasher and handwashing the awkward stuff.

The floor gets swept and mopped once a week, but we have an upstairs kitchen so don't have a problem of muddy boots coming through.

mrsmaidamess · 29/05/2009 12:44

Why doesn't dh clear up his own mess?

LovingTheRain · 29/05/2009 12:53

Have put pictures on my profile. Is clean at the moment, (DH is away)

I never let it get bad and always clean as i go.

AmuminScotland - don't think i am your sister, but my DH does do that too - uses everything and anything - drives me crazy and there's really no need to use 12 different things to cook 1 meal

DH doesn't clean up after himself as that's how it's always been for him and how he was raised too from what i can gather.

Caused endless rows in the past but now i don't bother arguing and just do it!

Your kitchen is small! I thought it was going to be much larger to warrant 2 hours cleaning a day.

Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem clearly is your dh and his inherant messiness/Mummy will clear it up rather than any lack of housekeeping tips.

mulranno · 29/05/2009 13:40

why dont you clean as he goes...so whilst he is cooking be alongside and prevent the carnage?...or why dont you cook and he cleans...I hate when people do half a job...my husband used to bath the kids...dry them and chnage into pjs whilst he was was watching TV...then thought he had done the job...whilst I was left to follow him around as he dropped wet towel, nappies etc after himself....new rules are everyone gets dressed/dried in bathroom or bedroom ONLY..clearing up is part of the job!

mulranno · 29/05/2009 13:42

Also think that we have "working kitchens"...it si not a show room we do a lot in it prep food 3 times a day...etc...so it is a working functioning kitchen...I try and keep the tops cleared...things put away ... but just wash down and sweep floor nightly

wasabipeanut · 29/05/2009 13:44

Cleaning as you go is imperative. I have a smallish galley type kitchen and it gets out of hand in no time.

This is why dishwashers were invented.

I wouldn't be impressed if my dh did that though.
