So in the manner of these threads on kitchens and bathrooms I'm hoping I can learn from your mistakes.

Need storage for books and toys but also hoping to watch TV in this room too. Am thinking about a unit a bit like this one but maybe a bit bigger??

Toying (pun intended ) with some of those mega bean bags for the floor for adults and kids alike as not a HUGE amount of floor space

Any advice hugely appreciated

Sounds obvious but look at the big toys first. The wee ones are easy anything can store them.

We have an expedit unit used as a bench which has garage, pirate ship etc on the top and various stuff underneath. It is a good height for kids playing at too.

GLTC, do have some lovely storgae soloutions, though are very expensive for what you get. keep an eye out on Ebay as there are a couple of companies that sell their surplus stock, brand new but at a fraction of the cost.

Storage cubes are good, depending on the age of children and how often adults, including other parents will be using them. I don't like bean bags for adults as they are big, always look messy and a nightmare to get in and out of!

A bench is also good, with storage below. If you have a small space, it may be worth getting a local joiner to build you a simple MDF unit that is designed to fit in not only the small stuff, but as Metatron pointed out, the larger stuff too, which in a small space can start to look messy, quickly. It can then be painted the same colour as the walls and is less intrusive and you get much more storage this way.

Ikea do some great rugs that double up as play mats, again would depend on the age of children.

I have a sofa in my playroom, but that's because I have a young child and all visitors have young children so we spend most of the time with them at the Moment. The Ikea Klippan is great at around £130 with washable and removable covers. But might be too big is space is limited.

Storage, seating and a surface for drinks etc are the key ime.

HTH.

will watch this with interest, I also need to do the same. Have three children 8,6 and 4 and due number four in september. The eight year old doesnt really play with toys now just his drum kit in his bedroom.

The six year old likes drawing, so it is only dd who is four who has toys downstairs in the playroom at the moment.

Although that will change with baby.

Really need to decorate and make nice though, so need inspiration

Agree think about the big stuff...mine are now doing stuff in their bedrooms (7, 8, 10)..but I found useful to have low boxes that they can tip out and tidy up agin themselves...as well as high stuff that you might want to manage...the 1000 piece jigsaw/paints etc. Hate bean bags, they are really expenive and take up a lot of space..what about a couple of wicker armchairs...as with a sofa if you have another adult over its a bit to cosy to be sitting side by side iyswim

Make it as easy as possible for the children to tidy themselves - that's all that matters!

I like the trofast system by ikea. You can interchange the boxes (few different sizes available so will fit different sized toys). Pretty cheap too.
