Out of season ones tend to go in wardrobes out of the way.

Current ones go on coat hooks in the utility room which is just off the hallway next to the front door.

janeite · 23/05/2009 09:47

On pegs on the backs of doors, in the cupboard under the stairs and in the cupboard at the top of the stairs. The ones on the backs of doors (in the girls rooms) do NOT look very tidy!

janeite · 23/05/2009 09:47

Oh and we cull them - frequently.

ComeOVeneer · 23/05/2009 09:51

I have 2 racks in the hallway, one lower one for the children (they only have 1 coat each and a foldable raincoat)along with 2 cushioned seat boxes, for shoes, book bags, swimming bags, ballet bags, hats, scarves, gloves etc.

Then a high one for dh and I (and guests). DH only has 2 coats, I have about 20. I keep 2 or 3 there and the rest in my wlak in wardrobe in the bedroom and swap them over periodicaly.

BonsoirAnna · 23/05/2009 09:53

We have a huge built-in walk-in wardrobe in the entrance hall (directly to the right of the front door) where we can hang all our coats on hangers, on a rail, and keep scarves, gloves, hats on shelves and also store tennis rackets, footballs, frisbees and all DD's art equipment. Heaven [lucky emoticon]

hippipotamiHasLost29Pounds · 23/05/2009 09:57

We have a peg rail with 9 pegs on the wall in our narrow (victorian) hallway.
The dc have one coat each plus a raincoat packamac thing. I have one coat, dh has 2. The rest of the pegs are taken up with bags (I have 3 handbags) the dc's swimming/pe/gymnastics kit, 3 umbrellas, one doglead. Looks a bit of a mess though - may need to have another sort-out.
Out of season coats get cleaned and stored in the wardrobe.

gill89 · 23/05/2009 10:17

i think we have too many coats!

i have about 5
dh has 3
kids have about 4 (and they are adult size)

"a huge built-in walk-in wardrobe" sounds like the answer.
we ahve a narrow cupboard that takes 3 pegs but with major work that could become a 6 foot long wradrobe affair but that is a bit extreme.

hmmm---ponders!

In the hall - a high up rail with three pegs for my bags and coats (several on each peg!! and lower down pegs for the children.

It's one of the easier things to keep tidy actually - now paperwork, if anyone has an answer for that one!!

gill89 · 23/05/2009 10:23

paperwork! aggh

that's another thread!

but we keep it all on the hall table until a landslide occurs and it won't stay stacked!

we keep the shredder under the table and beside it a box with lid to put junk that can be recycled without shredding.

but even with that to help the pile still gets HIGH

once sorted we have a filing cabinet that never gets sorted out so is bulging at the seams

NationalFlight · 23/05/2009 10:35

Thanks Gill

I need a shredder!

I have got a big filing cabinet but really want one with millions of drawers as I always have crossover stuff that doesn't fit a category

plus I never know what I'm allowed to chuck and what to keep...I have electricity bills for 1997...

ComeOVeneer · 23/05/2009 13:32

Luckily we have a big home office with loads of filling space and a shredder. I have a smal basket on the table in the hallway were that days post gets put. It is dealt with every day and filed/shredded/bills paid/info onto calendar etc and anything to be posted out put in the basket to be taken to postbox/office thefollowing morning.

NationalFlight · 23/05/2009 13:42

CoV, do you keep bills though? I never know if I might need them for something.

Say the company makes a mistake and I have no proof of what we paid, and so on...mind you this rarely happens.

ComeOVeneer · 23/05/2009 14:00

We keep a couple of years worth of bills. Mind you they are all on direct debit so we have proof of what we paid.

NationalFlight · 23/05/2009 14:05

Thankyou - that makes sense. So keeping bank statements is good, no?

ComeOVeneer · 23/05/2009 14:07

Yes we keep all bank statments also for tax reasons. Also good to have a few recent utiltiy bills etc incase you need to show them for proof of adress etc.

Quattrocento · 23/05/2009 14:13

Big cupboard thing next to the back door with 40 pegs. Enough for all the coats. Lots of room for wellies and boots and walking sticks and picnic baskets and coolboxes. Big boxes full of hats and gloves and scarves. Another big box for waterproofs (including trousers).

You know it makes sense ...

noordinarymum · 26/05/2009 23:21

I don't have the luxury of any sort of cupboard to keep coats etc., in. What i do have is a small porch area (straight in from the front door) So in the porch i have enough room for a hanging rail (one of those portable argos rail things) on one side where i hang loads of coats. Then on the other side i have a shoe cupboard. I don't think this is idea as i don't like to see all this 'stuff' each time i come in and also i don't suppose it looks nice to visitors.

ruddynorah · 26/05/2009 23:27

under stairs cupboard has two rows of hooks. we keep day to day coats on there with others in our wardrobes.

MaureenMLove · 26/05/2009 23:35

Ours are in the porch, which has two rows of hooks. (well, 3 hooks in each row really, I don't live in a castle!) I hate it through the winter months because it's so untidy. Just yesterday, I cleared the big coats out though and put them in the owners wardrobes. Much neater now.

Flibbertyjibbet · 26/05/2009 23:42

My proper coat and mac are in my wardrobe. As are ds's one each nice jackets. All other coats, fleeces and casual jackets are stuffed in a bedding box that doubles as a coffee table in our little cottage!

When the house is less of a building site they will be on hooks at the back door.

Previous small house had a little poorch and we ended up with so many coats on the hooks we couldn't open the blardy door properly some days.

So now I am strict and only I am allowed to own more than two coats/jackets.

terramum · 26/05/2009 23:54

We have no hallway and the under-stairs cupboard is impossible to get to so our coats etc go on a trad style coat/hat stand in the corner of the lounge, just inside the front door. Bargain at £12 at the local recycling centre . It holds a surprising amount of stuff and doesn't look very messy at all.

Tortington · 26/05/2009 23:55

hat stand here too

noordinarymum · 27/05/2009 00:10

We had a hat stand aswell for a while and it worked quite well until i started overloading it!! Eventually all the hooky bits started to break off and it was so bulky we had trouble opening the front door!

bellavita · 27/05/2009 00:33

Coat hooks behind the door underneath the stairs (where the shoes, ironing basket, suitcases and odds and sods are kept).

Out of season coats or jackets that are not worn on a daily basis, kept in the wardrobe.

PolkaDotRachel · 27/05/2009 15:02

We have little cupboard for "cloaks" with 5 pegs and a shelf above. It's just enough but have to put out of season ones away. DH also has done pegs in the (integral) garage for dirty mans coats/boots/general crap!
