oil for wooden work suface?

Hi
I have just bought an island unit with a solid wood top. It wasn't until I got it home that i realised it needed oiling....the thought of going back to Ikea to buy this oil fills me with dread.
Can I use anything else? I am assuming it needs to be food safe, so could I just use vegetable oil?

It's better to get proper oil as it's thicker and makes the wood more waterproof. I'm fairly sure B&Q or similar type stores do it.

linseed is the best

never tried veggie oil - it may just sit on the surface

HeadFairy · 16/05/2009 15:21

it's a bit dear but much more effective and a little goes a long way.

DH just went to B&Q and said he could only find teak oil, but he probably didn't look properly.
Thanks - I was hoping maybe there was something I already had in the house that I could use, but doesn't look like it!

Is the wood teak or oak? Teak oil you can usually find in garden centres because garden furniture is often made of teak.

Our kitchen worktops are oak so we use that oil from B&Q.

Or... this is a bit leftfield.... if you live near the sea and there's a chandlers near by, you can get teak oil from there

HeadFairy · 16/05/2009 15:40

ok, so I'm a bit sleep deprived, just re-read your post... you could only find teak oil.... dur!

Back to the chandlers...

HeadFairy · 16/05/2009 15:41

Can you order some oil online and just be careful with the worktop until it arrives?

PurlyQueen · 16/05/2009 15:41

I use Rustin's Danish Oil - £7.99 from Wilkinsons, or a tenner in John Lewis.

plantwoman · 16/05/2009 15:48

Rustins sounds good - we have a wilko's up the road, so i might pop there tommorow.
It has already got marks on it just from DH letting the boys eat their breakfast sitting at it yesterday! I don't want to leave it any longer
Thanks

You can sand out any marks, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Before you put the oil on lightly sand it with fine sand paper to get the marks out, then oil. Voila!
