It needs to be robust as we are a family of four, with two very grubby boys so do LOADS of washing!

Any recommendations would be gratefully received!

Having previously had a Bosch machine that died after 2 years I would recommend Miele. The machines seem to be built to last and they do regular promotions of free 5 or 10 year guarantees which gives me some comfort that Miele have confidence in their machines.

We bought the cheapest model we could find that was on the 10 year warranty promotion and are very pleased with it.The machines are expensive but have a look for online discount vouchers and Quidco discounts as we managed to get over £100 off our machine by doing that

My Hoover Nextra machine has just died after 6 years, but it's cost me around £250 in repairs to keep it going that long. So, not the best one to buy!

WTIFT - I've just bought a reconditioned Bosch on the advice of my washing machine repair man, who said that he very rarely has to repair them and when he does the parts are dirt cheap. He says he got my machine in part ex for a brand new one when the owners had a new kitchen. You've got me worried now!

Winetimeisfinetime · 14/05/2009 17:56

Sorry to worry you Oddhair. I know most people speak very highly of Bosch and we do have a Bosch fridge and freezer that are fine so they can't be all bad.

Perhaps we were just unlucky with our washer but it did only last a couple of years and during that time had had some very major parts replaced and still only limped along for the last six months. We also had a similar situation with our Bosch dishwasher and a fridgefreezer so I am not a fan.

Hopefully, though as yours is a recon most of the original Bosch bits will have been replaced

Just dont get smeg, very waistful of the energy, goes on for minimum of 2hours.If you put it on quick wash doesn`t wash properly.

lolaandned · 14/05/2009 18:11

i have an indesit washing machine tumble dryer and dish washer they are not expensive but work great i do 2/3 loads a day of washing and it is great also they can be replaced every few years before they go too grubby etc

Miele. Honestly I love it. I went to JL and they asked what I wanted from my washing machine. Me: I just don't want it to break after 2 years. Him: Miele, you want a Miele.

We have had it for 6 years so far, still going strong, no repairs at all yet.

Anything German such as a Miele or AEG should give you years of use. I have an AEG (German) - mine is 15/16 years old and still going strong. I have had 1 repair on it - a little motor thingy which was £60 and thats all.

ilove · 22/05/2009 08:37

I have a siemens and it is BRILIANT. Minimum of 3 loads a day for ten years, and has needed the brushes replacing once.

JetLi · 22/05/2009 08:40

John Lewis own brand are meant to be good too - they are "bought and badged" Miele or AEG machines I'm sure.
I heard that Bosch used to be manufactured in Germany but some of the models are now made in Spain which I'm told somehow lessens the build quality. Anyone tried a Siemens?
Wouldn't it be nice to Buy British
Some woman in Currys told my Mum recently you shouldn't expect white goods to last more than a couple of years these days. Stupid bint.

WinkyWinkola · 22/05/2009 08:41

Just don't buy Hotpoint! The worst customer service I've ever experienced. Ever.

JetLi · 22/05/2009 08:41

Oooh cross-post ilove! Thanks! Suspected Siemens ought to be good - another German brand.

RubberDuck · 22/05/2009 08:55

I've been told by our repair man NOT to buy AEG/Zanussi/Electrolux as they're all the same company now, and even the expensively badged AEGs just have Zanussi parts inside (we learned this the hard way after a very expensive repair on a 4 year old oven).

His recommend was Bosch/Siemens/Neff (all the same group) and Miele as the ones with the least repairs.

EvenBetaDad · 22/05/2009 09:18

Rubberduck - that is exactly our experience too.

Planning to buy a Miele washer and an Miele dryer in the next few months. There is a good chance they wil live longer than we will so it is a lifetime purchase. MIL has a Miele for 35 years and has only broke down once when the drive belt got a bit stretched and had to be adjusted. Very expensive though.

Countingthegreyhairs · 26/05/2009 10:35

Another vote for Siemens

I love mine to death

Not as expensive as Miele but in my view just as good, if not better

it washes brilliantly and hasn't broken down once in 7 years
