Does anyone have any good tips for washing blood off bed linen pls? had a nasty nosebleed on new pillowcase and duvet cover last night... Don't want to just put it in the machine for fear of setting the stain.
Oh it's mainly cream coloured cotton....

I was always told to soak in cold water....worth a try?

purepurple · 27/04/2009 12:26

yep, cold soak first
then a hot wash

PestoDrizzleMonster · 27/04/2009 12:26

Same as LittleMissNorty, soak in COLD first. It'll come out easily.

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/04/2009 12:27

spit on it.
seriously, whoever's blood it is needs to spit on it, rub it in, then wash as normal.

Bakersman · 27/04/2009 13:00

Thanks for the advice - will soak it as not too keen on the spitting thing
Wish me luck!!

You could spit then soak?
The enzymes (or something chemically sounding) in spit start to break down the ones in the blood, and the cold water (hot would cook the blood into the fabric) then dissolves them.
Or something.

From my GH book -

Sponge with cold salt water.
Machine wash using a biological detergent and a wash temp of at least 50C.
Pre-saok dried stains using a pre-wash detergent or washing soda followed by washing as above.

MayorNaze · 27/04/2009 13:07

that may take a lot of spit...

fresh ie still wet blood will rinse out dead easily under the cold tap, if it has sent in, ditto everybody else with the cold soak tip.

DevilsAdvocaat · 27/04/2009 16:42

it doesn't take a lot of spit.
ime it also works everytime, even with dried blood.

Lancelottie · 27/04/2009 17:01

Soap flakes. Seriously. Soak in cold water for unfeasibly long periods, then rub with soap flakes. Leaves horrible summy water, but it removed the nosebleed from my son's beloved 'special pillow' (threadbare patchwork with non-colourfast bits) without removing everything else.

Lancelottie · 27/04/2009 17:01

'scummy' water, even

MaryBS · 27/04/2009 17:02

Ace lifts it beautifully

varicoseveined · 27/04/2009 21:33

biotex isn't bad either

FrankMustard · 27/04/2009 21:37

rinse it asap in cold water and then soak in water with generous amount of salt for a few hours before you wash it as you would normally wash it.
But make sure all the stain has gone before you put it in a hot wash or the heat in the wash will "set" the stain.

FrankMustard · 27/04/2009 21:37

ps if it's already dried, borax should clear it.

Bakersman · 28/04/2009 20:01

Thanks again for the replies. I soaked it in cold water then washed on a cold wash with Ariel and OxyAction and the stain has gone. Thanks so much
