TMH ooh I know what you mean about 4year old boys. I have one on my hands too! And yes, I feel my son has suddenly shot up to the next surge of testosterone and seems to need a lot more roughouse play with his dad and is dealing out extra blows to his little sister too.

I love your ds's analogy though - what great insight! I am trying to get mine to stop and take two big deep breaths, when I catch him in the heat of the moment. I tell him that being angry is natural but it is NOT acceptable to deal with it by lashing out. I also tell him he has to walk away (but he never does - too young.....even I don't manage this!!)And that I would never allow anyone to treat him like this so I don't expect him to treat others this way either.

Perhaps you could say to ds that he has to blow in cool air to cool his hot chocolate down and then he'll feel calmer! And help him count his breaths (1,20. Then I say, 'right, find the words and tell your sister and I what the problem is,' Bit of a long-term strategy I grant you.....not the easiest when they're in the middle of torturing younger siblings!!

I'm right there with you trying to figure it out too though. But I'm viewing it as a phase and trying not to think my child has walked over to the dark-side. I hope!

laurasmiles · 27/04/2009 16:18

Ooop I mean count his breath (1,2) - not 20!!! I'm not aiming for a meditation session.

swanriver · 27/04/2009 16:49

TMH, I find the testosterone a nightmare if we are in (for long), and wonderful when we are out as they just run run jump jump and never whinge or whine. But when we are indoors too long there are non-stop power struggles, loud voices, physicality, although I think their cortisol/stress levels do rise at certain times of day and make things worse. Certainly after school pickup whether pre-school or big school, at 4 years, they needed at least half an hour to behave normally. I suppose it is how WE feel when we come back from a hard day's work.

Kids now playing very boisterously with their friend, but I've now put my foot down over hide and seek which usually involves pulling duvets off all the beds. They have resorted to shouting at each other whilst dressing up.

swanriver · 27/04/2009 16:53

x-post Laura.
The other thing I realised is that I keep having to MODEL anger management rather than exploding with rage at their exploits, which is all too easy imo. Basically, I'm the one with the hot choc feeling a lot of the time and I'm working on it..thanks Laura good advice.

Tortoise · 27/04/2009 17:03

Thanks prof. The circus looks good but not TKmaxx here.
I have got her the supermarket plus other bits which i am sure will be fine. It's not like she has seen the palace and asked for it. I immagine it will go for about £100 anyway.
It was this one

Evening all

mad there is a big surge in testosterone levels round age 4/5 so you are not alone with your DS.I also think he has managed to explain it really well to you - clever little boy. Also think Lauras ideas really good for teaching hime how to handle/deal with anger and other powerful emotions. Agree with swan though that sometimes just not erupting yourself in the midst of it can be the biggest challenge - also guilty of fizzy hot chocoalte more often than I'd like here Hopefully lots of outdoor time with nice weather will help.

tort I think your DD will be happy with whatever you end up with, no need to spend ££££

ehm sounds like a productive day - well done!

grouchy Hi! hope your not over doing it!

Got on quite well today - more calm and focused - more productive yay!
DD4 still being odd about food though....constant sweet demands, dinner refusal etc....think she is just testing boundries, but maybe also a bit unsettled with new nursery (which she is still loving though) ...sure it will pass....deep breath!

So list update:

load and run DW -DONE - now on again!
remake DD's beds DONE
clean clothes away DONE
tidy fuzzy felt away DONE (Then done again after DD's emptied all 1000 pieces over bedroom floor !)
review control journal DONE - Need to do again now!
review bids on ebay DONE
work out some sort of shopping/budgeting spreadsheet in my never ending quest to cut our grocery bill! IN PROGRESS

tonight:
mop dining room floor
order DD2's bday present NEXT
plan what else I need to sort for DD bday NEXT

Also done:
Dinner eaten (except DD4!) cleared
Homework X3
Reading X2
Made banana choc chip muffins
littlies bathed, stories, bed
older girls stories
DS to scouts
Hotspot clear
sink shone - YAY
Clothes out for tomorrow YAY!
Lounge Mission - YAY

So going to sort some Bday stuff for DD now, need to think about tomorrow a bit too, plus need to get on with some zone work sometime...
Still quite pleased with how i've got on today!

Good evenings all

wendy hope your eenjoying new house!

See you all tomorrow

Ludaloo · 27/04/2009 19:57

Hi Flyers

Just a quick post up to see how you all are

Tort Bleurgh...what a grim job!

I did have a message for someone else but...I've completely forgotton your MN name!!! .... blimey..... nope...gone completely...
lol....Arrrrggghhhhh...shall have to Facebook you instead!!!
God...I'm losing my marbles!

Hi EHM

Mad hope your little one is a bit calmer.
Re the mumps...when my dh took our DD1 to the doctors, the doctor was very suprised...apparently they just shouldn't get mumps at all once they have had the MMR.
As all 3 of mine have had it now, he concluded that a)either all mine just simply needed a higher dose in the first place to make them completely immune...
b)their immune system was low at the time of infection....or c)a different strand of mumps has developed which is itself immune to the MMR vaccine.
He did also file a national alert apparently.
I wouldn't worry though, because if my three are anything to go by, they have had very mild symptoms.
They have had exceedingly swollen glands...I mean they really do look bizarre, and you cannot tell where the neck starts and the jaw finishes!
DD2 and DS had a temperature and slight sore throat but Neurofen completely sorted that.
DD1 was as fit as a fiddle and the poor lamb has been bored to tears all week!

hmmmm....

OH!!!!!!! BIANCA!!!!!!!!! goodness...its been a long day!
Finally remembered! lol

Hope you all have a great day tomorrow xxxxxxx

scattyspice · 27/04/2009 20:08

Hi again.

Luda - Mumps! Poor things, I remember having that .

Mad - 4yo boys!!! I've been there too (still there actually ) Laura's tip - v good.

Done:
swimming (poor teacher could hardly teach as ds was asking so many questions ).

Floors and doors (ds did )

1 load of laundry sorted and put away (2 more to go).

BBtomorrow.

TheMadHouse · 27/04/2009 20:28

I knew I could rely on you ladies. I have given up on the wider MN world. I stay here or on my book swap threads.

It is good to know we are not alone. DS1 is a very clever chap, which can make him challenging (I am not braging - we said we wanted a thick children, as they are never unhappy ) . Both boys are really elequant. DS1 spoke worlds from 6 months. DS1 came home from school today (galen he got in to the walkable local primary, but not the local over subscribed faith school - so we can live with it for a while) with star of the day for his persiverance (his words) so I asked him what it meant an he turn round and said "for keeping trying mummy, silly you not knowing that - you persivere with us to say pardon after we burp"

I have had a good day on the cleaning front - upstairs is done.
Washer is on again

Mum is coming to iron tomorrow

I will be back with my lemon cupckae receipe in a mo

Great stuff Mad DS!

Galen I am overdoing it (yet again ) I am thinking I'll give the nursery stint a miss tomorrow.

I'll try and keep up with you all but I've got to sleep

Tortoise · 27/04/2009 21:00

Palace went for £88. I didn't bid. I know she will be happy with the other bits so trying not to think about it!

Going to list some stuff on Ebay now. Got to make some money to maybe going on holiday sometime. looks like a trip to visit my parents and brother in turkey won't be possible. Haven't told her yet.
