Looking after stainless steel worktop

Hi,

I've just got a freestanding kitchen unit with a stainless steel top, and I've already managed to get a sort of scuff-mark on the surface.

Apart from being careful, what else should I be doing to help keep it in good condition?

And can I get the mark out?

TIA

Someone must know, surely?

I have friends with stainless steel appliances who swear by a thin application of baby oil, gently buffed. I think there is also a special steel oil, but it may be just repackaged baby oil and sold for 10x as much.

No personal experience, though, I'm afraid.

Thanks - I shall try the oil and see how that goes.

You can't stop it getting scratched at all, being realistic - the first one is the worst and then you just go with it and according to wanky interiors magazines it develops a "lovely patina" after a while! I generally use a damp e-cloth for cleaning...

Oh I like the idea of a "lovely patina" - it'll start to match the rest of my furniture then . I'm not planning to get a whole kitchen, and this almost-instant scratch has confirmed that it wouldn't really suit me, luckily this is just something big enough to cover 2 appliances to give a bit of extra worktop till we do the whole thing (non-steel!) in a few years.

Oh I love stainless steel - started with a ss topped table and it is sooo child friendly - I just put on a table cloth if I want it to look a bit smarter (for all the dinner parties we have of course )
