Is there anything I can do about the wasp that seems determined to nest in DDs new wendy house?

We have just moved into RAF accommodation, and a little bonus left to us by a previous occupant is a wooden Wendy-house. DD is 2.5 and loves it.

After she had the screaming abdabs twice in the matter of 10 minutes because of a wasp in there, I sent DH to investigate (he is v calm around bees and wasps, to the extent that he gained a load of cred with one of his lots of trainees by picking up a big bee in his hand and carrying it to the window). He brought back the beginning of a nest.

Thing is the wasp just keeps returning. It is now starting to build a new nest (I have just been and peered through the window) despite the citronella candle that is burning in there at the moment.

Any suggestions on deterrents? Citronella oil? Where can I buy it?

TIA

apparently you can get fake wasps nests to deter wasps
my mum had one up by her front door as she kept getting wasps nesting there.
worked a treat

don't know if you can get them here, she lives in canada

brimfull · 21/04/2009 16:05

here

BunnyAndJoon · 21/04/2009 16:06

Oh thanks - will google

The only other option is curtains for the wasp (I mean that in the metaphorical rather than literal sense)

We have this problem and I was told that as long as you leave the wasp's nest alone no other wasp will try to muscle in on it. So we killed off the poor wasp, left his wasp intact and now .... have 3 new wasps buzzing around in there.

Will watch this thread closely.

ABetaDad · 21/04/2009 16:17

Sadly, I suspect the wasps are using the wood in the wendy house to make their nest. If you look carefully you may well see little white stripes on the wood where they are scraping it off as 'paper' stips.

The wasps are just going to find it too attractive. We have the same problem but they use our entire house !

You could keep removing the nests until they give up. It is their nest building time now and they are at it in our attic. I will have to go up and kill them next week in a hail of wasp spray, ant powder, sweat and fear.

My wife will be holding the ladder and giving instructions of course.

BunnyAndJoon · 21/04/2009 16:37

hmm

Looks like the "there is already a nest here" deterrent doesn't always work long term?

I am pretty sure it is getting the wood elsewhere - it keeps popping out, and the inside is painted.

Will check. But I don't like being in there, it is a bit cramped for 2 of us (me and the wasp)

May send DH in later

I have no advice but just want to say I hate wasps, they are not useful in any way, they blight my enjoyment of every summer, I really cannot put into words how much I hate wasps, lol

Ripeberry · 21/04/2009 16:52

Wasps are very usefull as they eat flies and catterpilars. Its just that by August/September they go mad for sugar as they have to get ready to hibernate (some of them).
Every creature has a purpose even wasps

louii · 21/04/2009 16:56

Just kill the bugger, god i hate wasps, there was a huge fecker trying to get in my window yesterday.

compo · 21/04/2009 16:57

loads of other creatures eat flies and caterpillars surely?!!

BunnyAndJoon · 21/04/2009 18:20

I hate wasps too - but try not to kill them without cause.

There were 2 in their earlier so not sure how that works with the territorial thing

DH has killed one. I think the other is still hanging around

Both wasps are now dead (DH done it gov, not me).

I am going to melt down a citronella candle and paint the wax on the inside of the wendy-house.

Will report back

After reading this thread had a look in my DDs wendy house and there was a tiny wasp nest with eggs in the little cells.
I've just fed it to the chickens .

BunnyAndJoon · 21/04/2009 22:33

It will be back RB, oh yes it will!

Ripeberry · 22/04/2009 16:04

More yummy snacks for the chickens then

Fizzylemonade · 22/04/2009 17:15

I know Lakeland usually sell wasp repellant in their summer catalogue, if the wasp keeps coming back I think you are justified in buying one of those wasp trap things and ending its life.

Ripeberry · 23/04/2009 23:02

Amazing, the little bugger had built a brand new one with eggs within 24 hrs. The chickens loved it.

BunnyAndJoon · 24/04/2009 15:15

They are determined aren't they. I would have just kept removing it but DD wants to play in there, and kept going into meltdown when she found herself in there with a wasp!

I usually manage to repel wasps when outside with the stuff you spay on your own body to repel mosquitoes and the like. Now whilst I don't want to douse myself in the stuff - it certainly repels them and I personally think it is less hazardous than wasp spray. (In our house I do wasps and DH does spiders - removes that is not kills....)

Perhaps some strategic squirts on the walls of the playhouse especially where it is trying to nest may make it reconsider?

jazzandh · 24/04/2009 20:58

that's spray on not spay!

BunnyAndJoon · 24/04/2009 21:17

Thanks - might try that

OP posts:
Bakersman · 24/04/2009 22:04

I've not tried this but been told if you blow up a brown paper bag and hang it up they think it is another nest and avoid the area. may be worth a try.
However, are you in UK? If so chances are it's a bees nest you're looking at - I always used to confuse the 2 but you can google the pics. Its far too early for wasp season here but honey type bees are about in force. They are harder to deal with and are a protected species... if that's what you're dealing with maybe call a bee keeper. I only know all this as we have bees nest ATM. Also read that you can smear marmalade somewhere far enough away and they will go straight to that so your daughter can play in peace. Apparently they LOVE it.
Good luck
