Now the weather's better and the windows are open we're getting our usual house guest flies. Anyone got any tips on how to get rid/dissuade from hanging around without using a fly spray? TIA

I get loads of flies in the summer. Dreading it already!
I always end up hanging those horrible sticky things from the ceiling! But thet do work.

Fly swatter. Rolled up news paper. If you pop some netting over your door when it's open they shouldn't come in. I encourage the ones that get in my house out through the window. I hate them!

burn lavender...my local garden centre told us this and it works!

sticky paper rolls - look disgusting as flies
gather but works and chemical free.

I just use the spray and lots of it, frequently as I have the doors and windows open all day long.

Venus fly trap

Citronella oil works better than lavender. You can get citronella tealight candles to burn or there are some chemical/aerosol free insect repellents that contain citronella.

I've got a great swatter. Thinnish bendy plastic. One whap and it's dead

Tortoise · 20/04/2009 13:12

If it is anything like my house, a swatter just isn't enough. Spend all day chasing flies.

My dog attempts to catch them but he is usless at it lol!

inthegardenifyouneedme · 20/04/2009 18:14

I hoover them up...gross but v effective.

inthegardenifyouneedme · 20/04/2009 19:43

Forgot to add, will never squish a fly again. My son squashed a big fat one on the windowsill and tons of little tiny maggots came out and crawled off into my gaps (yeuck). Still makes me puke thinking about it!

whoingodsnameami · 20/04/2009 19:45

I just use the spray, when iether the kids are p[laying outside or in bed.

whoingodsnameami · 20/04/2009 19:46

Also as a tip, fly spray kills ant nests.

Whizzz · 20/04/2009 19:50

We got a sort of marker pen type thing - you basically 'draw' the fly killer around the window frames - fly lands, drops down dead. Effects last for ages too.
Wouldn't use though where small ones could also dip fingers in though, as its powerful stuff

Aranea · 20/04/2009 22:11

ooh fantastic, I'm going to try citronella and lavender. I spent this afternoon trying to deal with a near-hysterical fly-phobic daughter and am dreading the summer!

have those electric zapper lanterns in every room - about £9.99 each - very effective and NO chemicals

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 21/04/2009 21:28

Welshwoman -what's an electric zapper lantern?
