we were given a second-hand leather sofa which is in great condition - all except for the cigarette odour that lingers (we are a non-smoking household). I've tried the upholstery spray by 1001 to hide the smell but next day it's still smells! please help! any tips?

vinegar and water. put bowls of vinegar and water (half half) under around and on top of the sofa. it removes odours unbelievably. leave over night and then change the vinegar water mix until the smell has gone. it works amazingly.

We had this prob with a three piece leather suite. Got it in an antique place and didn't notice the smell until we got it home. I just rubbed some essential oils in, leather being porous takes on the smell of its surroundings, so now it stinks of our house. Never heard of the vinegar thing, that would be worth a go

I've Googled this but not all websites are consistent with advice so thought I'd have a go at asking on MN. Thanks girls, will try both tips.

kittywise, we didn't notice the smell til we brought the sofa home either. since we're non smokers we've really noticed it in the living room. had I known it was from a smoker's home, we probably would have just stayed with our previous one. ah well, will make the best of it.

Thanks again

Don't worry, the smell will go away, even if you do nothing at all

vinegar and water got the smell of ds's vomit out of our car overnight (after it had been sponge cleaned and still stank. it is amazing in that it absorbs odours from the air. it is an old mn tip that i use time and time again.
