Net Curtains - need to find an alternative

Hubby and I could really fall out over the net curtains in our house. I think they look awful, much better and brighter without them.

However he insists that we have them as convinced everyone is looking in on us and wants the privacy. Also thinks its a security risk if you can see straight in.

So need to compromise and put something up at the window (currently have curtains in lounge and bedroom) but cannot find something to go up that still lets the light through. Any suggestions welcome please..

really louii? we all have them round here and we're all trendy executive types

louii · 13/04/2009 21:57

Honestly. Do not see them at all here now. With the exception of maybe a very old lady.

hilarious! nets have such a funny stigma about them. I had a nose on the JohnLewis website last night and they had some nice 'voiles' which were no way as bad as some of the frilly lacey nets some people have up in the windows! might need to see them in person though as they may be a bit naff aswell.

I bought some white muslin from ikea (we have box bay window with 4 pains of glass) I made 4 panels using the muslin and hung them like a net, but not gathered just straight across the window pane. Looks better than nets but stops people gawping in!

Just to say thanks to you all for your posts and advice, I've done stacks of research and finally decided on white wooden venetian blinds in the bedroom (so nobody can see my DH getting changed!) and cream roller blinds in the lounge (so nobody can see my DH chilling out watching TV!).

Will look lovely when they're all up! Thank you

but the room will be dark. net curtains aren't that bad, join us in the net curtain dark side

ducdo · 04/05/2009 09:01

You know what southeastastra you may be right... when I had a look at the selection of nets and voiles at John Lewis they weren't as bad as when I last bought some so you never know..

We got plain white voile from Textile direct, cost about £5 off the roll, for a 3mtr piece. Granted it's not quite as bright as without them but the privacy is much better and the window looks pretty. I had the same dilemma as you, didn't want old lady nets or blinds which blocked the light.

Check out window films direct they offer window films and there much better than curtains and easier to cleab lol

Pleated blinds are quite good. I have black ones in my bedroom, as I live in a bungalow. A bit sultry during the day, but at least you can't see them from the street. I am sure they do them in other colours. I have also seen sari fabric used with fantastic effect.

elongi · 25/10/2016 11:35

I have Venetian blinds in my bedroom and there quiet nice.

I live in upstairs flat overlooked by other upstairs ones. And a woman is forever looking straight across into our sitting room. We have luvly wooden fair wide xpensive blinds it's hard to judge how to get them to give us privacy at the moment I am so desperate I have got about 6 fly nets stuck to window with blue tack but we carnt see out anyone help please

massi71 · 15/08/2017 19:16

John Lewis do gorgeous plain voile roman blinds. I have them with floor to ceiling curtains on either side.

EmNetta · 16/08/2017 14:53

I started with blinds, nets, voiles and window-films, but gradually grew greenery in garden fronting living-room plus assorted glass shelves with plants on the in side - always get compliments, but it did take a few years. (Still have film in kitchen, as alongside door and view from sink is just next-door's bricks).

For crying out loud, net curtains are extremely practical, can be opened or closed at will, let in a lot of light, allow you to see out but not others to see in, and are cheap. And everyone comments on how nice mine look.
