toilet cleaning - is mil bonkers?

I've just found out from my sil how my mil cleans the toilets and I'm gobsmacked! Apparently she scoops out all the water then scrubs ever square inch of the bowl with bleach and a scourer. She thinks a brush is nowhere near efficient enough (which I can understand) - but as for scooping all the water out - isn't that a tad OTT????

sounds OTT to me, but I am a slattern who chucks bleach down and then has a slight wipe round with a brush

belgo · 08/04/2009 13:19

I wish she'd come round and clean my toilets. She right, a brush isn't efficient enough.

compo · 08/04/2009 13:20

she sounds great, can she do mine?!!

seeker · 08/04/2009 13:20

My friend sacked her cleaner because she refused to do this!

Fizzylemonade · 08/04/2009 16:17

Errrr I did this when I moved into this house as the limescale was very bad. But I only did it so the Harpic stuff wasn't diluted.

Now I know why the previous people had those blu loo things to HIDE the limescale that they hadn't cleaned.

Now though I use a loo brush to keep on top of it.

Pristine white it is!

Thanks for these replies - I consider myself 'average' when it come to house cleaning, but in all my years of keeping the house clean (30 and counting!)it had never once occurred to me to take the water out of the toilet!!!!
MIL's house is clean beyond belief - ultra sparkly and shiny, and now I know how much effort she puts in to get it to that standard. But I won't be adopting her methods!
She is also known to iron 'everything' - and I mean every single thing. And FIL insists that all his shirts are folded and stored in individual plastic bags!
Oh and another thing - apparently she weighs the washing! Anybody else do that???

OP posts:
Tinker · 08/04/2009 19:15

How often does she do this? Oh, teh joy of living in a soft water area. Has never occurred to me that toilets get limescaled (not that I'd do much about it anyway )

redsky · 08/04/2009 19:37

How often? - hmmm not sure about that but knowing her it could be daily!

OP posts:
DuffyFluckling · 08/04/2009 19:42

Why does she weigh the washing?

FAQinglovely · 08/04/2009 19:46

maybe she weighs it to make sure she's not going over the "weight limit" for the washing machine (you know "5kg" drum, "7kg" drum )

me - well I just shove the washing in until there's just a smallish space near the top of the machine and then shut the door and switch it on

HeadFairy · 08/04/2009 19:46

Why on earth does she scoop out the water, you know she can achieve the same effect without having to stick her hand down the bowl. She needs to life the cistern lid and lift the stopvalve up and then flush, so the water flushes out without refilling the cistern. A couple of flushes and she'll have an empty bowl.

Strange behaviour though, to my memory I've never needed to eat out of the loo or anything like that that required it to be that clean. Obviously it's not smeared with poo but beyond that I don't really care what bugs are down there, I'm not going to stick any part of my anatomy down there so who cares?

choufleur · 08/04/2009 19:46

that would never have occurred to me. my mother is obsessively clean (i'm not) and she doesn't do that.

just use bleech with limescale stuff in it. it seems to do the job. it's a toilet after all.

DuffyFluckling · 08/04/2009 19:50

Ahh but HeadFairy, there are a couple of strange small people living in my house who are extremely likely to stick every part of their anatomy down there. The smallest one has a crush on the loo brush and if I turn my back for a second they have secret and loving rendezvous in the bathroom. The larger one thinks it is very clever to poke the loo roll down in to the water, "just tidying up the loo Mummy".

HeadFairy · 08/04/2009 19:53

oh duffy I'm going to hate that phase (not there yet luckily) I think I'd still prefer cleaning whichever of ds's body part he's stuck down there than maintaining a loo I could eat out of.

ChocFudgeCake · 10/04/2009 20:05

That is shocking. I'd never hear of anyone this thorough. I am not tempted.

catinthehat1 · 10/04/2009 20:10

But what on earth does she do with the water she's scooped out of the loo?

If it goes in a bucket , or down the sink, surely that spreads contagion elsewhere. It's a never ending gag fest isn't it?

chipmonkey · 10/04/2009 20:25

Kim and Aggie recommend this. The book is slowly gathering dust on a shelf in my house!

odisco · 10/04/2009 21:53

I can think of few places in the house that get washed as often as the loo. Why would you do that?

breaghsmum · 11/04/2009 10:32

ive never done that in my life and my loos are always sparkly clean. i can understand if it was a kim and aggie situation type loo ( absolutely disgusting) but not for routine cleaning. i spray with cleaner leave for a few minutes while i do sink and bath and then i wash with round with an old cloth. never had anything that stubborn to need anything else.

QuintessentialShadow · 11/04/2009 10:39

so, where exactly does she put the water from the toilet? Into the sink? Into the bucket she washes the floor with? at emptying the toilet bowl out. How extremely unhygienic.

QuintessentialShadow · 11/04/2009 10:40

stupendous x post with catinthehat ...

Saltire · 11/04/2009 10:44

Sounds like my MIL, who I overheard saying to step FIl last night "saltire's very untidy isn't she".
Well yes I am, but I do clean my loo, vacum, polish wash teh floors etc.

She got me Kim n Aggies book for christmas and had a form filled in to send off to nominate me for appearing on the show. Step FIL told her he'd leave her if she sent it off

notsoteenagemum · 11/04/2009 10:46

Why oh why does the inside of the toilet need to be so clean?
I've never understood that, the only bodypart that ever comes into contact with it is my rubbergloved hand, the seat I can understand and the flusher but why the bowl?

islandofsodor · 11/04/2009 10:46

Its the occasional Flylady swish and swipe for me I'm afraid.

Bonkers.

There are more interesting things to do in life than clean.
