Silicon Cookware vs good old tin

Hi,

I have decided that I am going to start baking. I need to buy cookware. I am tempted to buy the silicon type but wondered if I would be best to stick to normal baking tins?

Any advice please

Thanks

Silicone is very very good, I have to say. You need to put it on a baking tray, but I have been very impressed. Aside from that I like Anolon tins.

Silicone. I've recently replaced a lot of my horrid old tins and silicone rocks. I found my silicone loaf tin made cakes slightly shorter and fatter than the tin tin but it matters not

Another vote for silicone. The muffins just spring right out. And it sort of squashes down in the drawer so it takes up much less storage space.

If you want to do rectangular things (like loafs), the Jamie Oliver stuff from Tefal does hold its shape very well - I found plain silicone tends to sag out on the long sides so my loaves were a weird and wonderful shape. Still tasted fine though (and so much easier than greasing and lining and not managing to get it all into the corners...)

i vote silicon too

my silicon loaf tin is far superior to my loaf tin made of tin!

Is it, um, completely safe? I'm always a bit wary of it thinking it may contaminate the food with nasty chemicals.

If you go for tin, go to lakeland and buy the cake tin liners (they do loaf shaped ones and also round ones). Then never grease a cake tin again...

Great thanks for your input. Silicon it is. I now just need to learn how to bake

If I remember, I will post my fantastically easy un-fuck-upable recipe for courgette muffins.

Muffins are a really good place to start - it's very easy to modify a basic recipe according to whatever nuts etc you have around.

Silicone.

Mine is from Tupperware and I have to say that it bulges a bit in the middle when I bake bread in it. Does anyone have one that doesn't do this?

I would never buy another tin.

Tangle · 09/04/2009 15:44

MmeLindt - the Jamie Oliver Tefal silicone stuff has a metal rim so does maintain its shape very well - I thought it was a bit gimicky but got one to try as I was fed up of bulgy banana bread and I haven't regretted it.
